Opening Day of trout season happened Saturday at the four trout parks in the state of Missouri. As of noon on Saturday, Montauk had sold the most trout tags with 2,108 followed by Roaring River State Park with 1,826 and Bennett Springs State Park with 1,553. Montauk finished the day selling 2,148 trout tags of which 1,894 were adult tags and 254 were children’s tags. A total of 38 lunkers were caught at Montauk on opening day with Tad Headrick of Salem catching the largest of the day: a 6 pound, 2 ounce rainbow. The next largest trout caught was John Holdinghand of Herculaneum with a 5 lb, 12 oz rainbow, followed by Keith Muehler of Pacific with a 5 lb, 8 oz rainbow. Catch and keep trout season will continue through October.

The Salem R-80 School District had scheduled a planning night to begin development of a Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) for tonight, but that meeting has been postponed due to the adverse weather. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

The 19th Annual Polar Plunge was held on Sunday, February 22nd at the Lake of the Ozarks and was a splashing success, raising $208,000 to-date. A record 654 brave men and women from around the area donned costumes and swimwear to take a chilly dip into the Lake of the Ozarks. Their Reason for Freezin’… the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri! Competition for the Golden Plunger was steep this year. Participants were encouraged to come in costume and compete for the chance to take home the “golden plunger.” The Salem High School was awarded 2nd place in the category of school winners.

The National Weather Service (NWS) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) will be promoting weather safety during the 2014 Severe Weather Awareness Week that will run today through Saturday, March 8th.  This week has also been named National Severe Weather Awareness Week and we invite everyone to "Be A Force of Nature: Take the Next Step". The highlight of the awareness week is the annual statewide tornado drill, which will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 4th.  Should weather become a factor, the drill may be postponed until Thursday, March 6th.  The NWS will kick off the drill with a Tornado Warning, which is plainly marked as a test.  This test will cause NOAA Weather Radios to activate, and it is also our hope that every community will set off their sirens and media stations will forward the drill as if this were a real emergency.  Next, it will be up to every business and family to participate in the drill by putting their plans into action.  Preparing today may make the difference in surviving the storms to come this spring.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Wednesday, February 19th at 5:05 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference a violation of an order of protection. The investigation revealed that a 40-year old Salem male had violated an order of protection by attempting to relay messages to the victim through a third party. He was arrested on that charge and on an active arrest warrant from Ferguson Police Department. He was released to Ferguson Police Department and an application for a warrant will be made. On Thursday, February 20th at 2:41 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to the Arnold Police Department to transport a 29-year old Salem female to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active warrant from the City of Salem. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that afternoon at 12:34, an officer made contact with a 20-year old Springfield male in the 200 block of North Grand who had an active arrest warrant from Green County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition. A little later that afternoon at 1:55, an officer was dispatched to the Walnut Motel in reference to an intoxicated subject that would not leave after checkout time. The investigation led to the arrest of a 63-year old Springfield male for disorderly conduct, failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer, and resisting arrest. He was issued summons to appear in court and put on a 12-hour hold. Contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242 if you have any info regarding an investigation.

The Hillcrest Lady Hornets got out to a 15 point half time lead and cruised to a 74-57 win over the Salem Lady Tigers Saturday afternoon in District Basketball play in Bolivar. Savannah Hanning scored 20 points to the Lady Tigers and Kaleigh Nash finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 10-15 record.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers are scheduled to face the Eldon Mustangs tonight at 6:00 in the first round of District play at Bolivar High School. Jabari Brown led all scorers with 21 points, and the Missouri Tigers cruised to an 85-66 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Southeastern Conference action at Mizzou Arena. Freshman Keanau Post contributed a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench as the Tigers (20-7, 8-8 SEC) improved to 14-2 at home this season. Jordan Clarkson also scored 14 points to go along with a game-high seven assists, while Earnest Ross added 11 points in the win. Missouri will host Texas A&M on Wednesday.

Kevin Shattenkirk scored the go-ahead goal in a four-goal third period as the St. Louis Blues rallied for a win in Ryan Miller's debut, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 on Sunday. Patrik Berglund had two goals and Magnus Paajarvi also scored for the Blues, who got their first post-Olympics win (1-2-0) after losing the first two games 1-0. The Blues will host the Tampa Bay Lighting on Tuesday.

Ryan Miller's long tenure with the Buffalo Sabres has come to an abrupt end, as the former Vezina Trophy recipient has been dealt to the St. Louis Blues as part of a blockbuster five-player trade. In addition to Miller, Buffalo's franchise leader in wins, the Sabres sent captain Steve Ott to the Blues. St. Louis parted ways with starting goaltender Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart and prospect William Carrier. The Sabres also obtained a pair of draft choices in the swap, St. Louis' first-rounder in 2015 and a conditional third-round selection in 2016.

Shane Robinson drove in three runs with a couple of singles and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 7-1 on Sunday in spring training. Michael Wacha pitched 1 2/3 innings in the start for St. Louis, striking out one, walking two and giving up one hit. The Cardinals will play the Tigers at 12:05 today.

Mike Moustakas hit a pair of homers to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in Cactus League action on Sunday. Wade Davis allowed one hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings. The Royals will play the White Sox at 2:05 this afternoon.

Funeral services for Lee D. Melton of Arnold, age 87, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Edgar Springs.
