Opening day of trout season was jammed packed at Montauk State Park Saturday as a total of 2,974 trout tags were sold consisting of 2,540 adult tags and 434 children tags. A total of 64 lunkers were posted on the first day with Daniel Evans of Centralia, Illinois, catching the largest fish of opening day as he reeled in a 9 lb, 12 oz rainbow trout. Mark Teighes of Lonedell caught the next largest trout bringing in a 9 lb, 4 oz rainbow, and Doug Stephens rounded out the top three by hauling in an 8 lb, 13 oz rainbow trout. From the immediate area, Doyle Hood of Licking and Kevin Barr of Rolla each caught a 7 lb, 7 oz rainbow, while Steven Heavin from Edgar Springs brought in a 6 lb, 9 oz rainbow, and Ben Adams of Salem was able to reel in a 5 lb, 1 oz rainbow trout. Diane Baalman of Bachtown, Illinois, netted the largest trout caught by a woman and that trout weighed in at 7 lb, 5 oz. The catch and keep trout season will last until October 31
st.The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, Emergency Management Director Brad Nash is requesting approval from the Board to establish an Emergency Operation Center at the Dent County Fire District and will also present updates to the Emergency Operation Plan. He would like the Board to adopt the revised plan. City Attorney Mark Weaver will then report on the public hearing and meeting held prior to the Board meeting on the sub-division of Lot 84, Block “W” of the Douglass Park addition. In unfinished business, at the last meeting, Alderman McDaniels had talked to Mike Fiaoni from the Department of Conservation and Dave Massengale from the US Forest Service about transplanting the three to four inch truck ash trees that are at the treatment plant. These trees would be professionally removed and then planted properly in the city park at a cost of $1,900, and the Board needs to approve the payment to have the trees transplanted. Also in unfinished business, the Board was advised at earlier meetings that Sho-Me Power was raising their rates to the City by 34%. The Board needs to make a decision as to how much of the increase will be passed on to the customers and this must be done by an Ordinance. During reports of City Officials, Board and committees, Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Board, Sean Curley will report on their hearing and meeting held earlier in the evening. Alderman Jim McDaniels, Bill Riley, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem along with Mayor Gary Brown. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills, the board will discuss Bill #3121 that is an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and Bucher, Willis and Ratcliff Corporation for engineering services on the Airport Grant with MoDOT; they will discuss Bill #3122 which is an ordinance to authorize a write-off for uncollectible utility accounts for the City of Salem that the auditor’s recommended in their report; and the board will address Bill #3123 which is an ordinance approving a settlement agreement with Sprint Nextel Corporation, formerly known as Sprint Corporation and it’s affiliates. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

All varsity and JV basketball players and cheerleaders and their parents are invited to the 2007-2008 Basketball Sports Banquet. It will be held on Tuesday, March 4th at the Salem High School cafeteria beginning at 6:30 pm. Coach Travis and Gayle Wrightsman, and Coach Karr will hand out their awards.
Matt Treanor doubled in a pair of runs during a five-run fourth inning, as the Florida Marlins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4 in Grapefruit League action. Troy Glaus hit two-run double for St. Louis and Aaron Miles drove in a run in the loss. Kyle McClellan pitched well, not allowing any runs, while striking out three in three innings. Blake Hawksworth received the loss after getting roughed up for five runs on five hits in one inning. The Cards are 2-2 in Grapefruit League play.
Ryan Roberts hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, to help the Texas Rangers defeat the Kansas City Royals 8-7 in Cactus League action. David DeJesus went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Mario Lisson smacked a solo home run for the Royals in the loss. Joel Peralta received the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Royals are 1-3 this spring.
Henry Dugat scored 18 points to lead the Baylor Bears to a 100-89 victory over the Missouri Tigers in Big 12 Conference action at the Ferrell Center. Three-point shooting proved to be the difference in this game, as Baylor outscored Missouri, 33-18 from long-distance. Missouri (15-14, 5-9) was paced by Leo Lyons, who tallied 22 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. Keon Lawrence added 19 points, while Demarre Carroll chipped in with 17.
Brian Boucher, picked off an American Hockey League roster by the Sharks at the NHL's trade deadline, came up big in his first game back in the league, stopping 24 shots as San Jose downed the Blues, 2-0. Manny Legace let in both goals on 34 shots for the Blues, who lost their sixth in a row.
The St. Louis Blues signed forward Brad Boyes to a long-term contract on Saturday. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Boyes, 25, leads the team with a career-high 32 goals, and ranks ninth in the NHL in goal scoring. His 47 points (32 goals, 15 assists) are second on the club
The St. Louis Rams signed kicker Josh Brown to a five-year contract, the same day long-time Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins retired. Wilkins, who spent 11 of his 14 NFL seasons with St. Louis, announced his intentions Friday. Hours later, the Rams had their replacement in Brown, who has spent all five of his NFL seasons with Seattle.
The San Francisco 49ers signed free agent wide receiver and long time Ram, Isaac Bruce Friday.
