A strangling snow storm hit the Ozarks Saturday leaving anywhere from eight inches of snow in northern eastern Dent County to 13.3 inches in Edgar Springs. But the snowy and icy conditions did not stop the enthusiasm as the opening of trout season got off to a bang with State Senator Frank Barnitz starting the fishing at 6:30 with a starter’s pistol, then joined in the throng of fisherman on the banks of the Current River. A total of 1,870 adult trout tags were sold along with 183 youth tags. A number of lunkers were caught, but the two largest of the day were 6 pound, 15 ounce rainbows caught by Jim Lawing Jr. of St. Charles and Perry Farmer of Poplar Bluff. A 6 lb, 14 oz rainbow was reeled in by Dave King of Florissant, and the largest trout caught locally was by Seth Kimrey of Licking and that was a 5 lb, 15 oz rainbow. Trout season will last until October 31^st in the state.

An accident happened at 8:00 Saturday evening in Dent County on Highway 32 about five miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford driven by 28-year old Melissa Hailey of Salem was traveling westbound on Highway 32. Hailey lost control on the ice-covered roadway causing the Ford to travel off the south side of the roadway and overturn. Suffering minor injuries was 12-year old Amber Hailey who was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Also suffering minor injuries were seven-year old Autumn Hailey, three-year old Ciara Hailey, two-year old Krista Hailey, 10-year old Trebor Hailey and Melissa Hailey. A private vehicle took them all to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Suffering moderate injuries was 39-year old Robert Hailey and he was taken by the Salem EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Ford was totaled and was left at the scene.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in reports of City officials, boards and committees, Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Jackson, and Kenneth Nash will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City along with Jim McDaniels. McDaniels would also like an update on the city limit extension, soccer fields, the cleaning of the front fence at the airport, spring clean-up around the city, the community-wide yard sale, the advertising of recycle days, and the need to do something with the water in the creek on Third Street. Mayor Gary Brown will also discuss items involving the City of Salem as well as report on driver’s school and the wells. The Board will then address several bills including an ordinance establishing pay for Missouri Public Utility Alliance’s Mutual Aid program, an ordinance giving monetary support to Project Graduation, and two ordinances revoking and then correcting a previous ordinance that had the wrong amount and wrong improvements listed. Resolution 1-2009 will be discussed concerning the Missouri local government employees retirement system (LAGERS). In new and miscellaneous business, Todd Kinerk is requesting the City to sign over a Quit Claim Deed for railroad right-of-way that adjoins his sawmill property. At the last Board of Alderman meeting, Mayor Brown mentioned that all businesses and contractor’s are required to have a license with the City and the Board requested the item by put on the agenda for further discussion, and the Water/Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory is requesting permission to purchase a used manure spreader for the sewer treatment plant for $11,000. After approval of bills presented, the Board will then go into closed session to discuss personnel. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen meeting is open the public.

The Crusaders of Jefferson City Helias stopped the Salem Tigers and their magical run through the Districts Friday night by the score of 66 to 47. Salem was led in scoring by C.J. Smith with 13 points as the Tigers could not get the three-point shots to drop. The Tigers finished with a 13-14 record.

The Kansas Jayhawks took revenge on a cold shooting Missouri Tigers team and thrashed them at Allen Field House by the score of 90-65. Leo Lyons led Missouri with 20 points as the Tigers fall to 24-5 on the year and 12-3 in the Big 12. They will face Oklahoma Wednesday.

Chris Mason collected 26 saves and the St. Louis Blues picked up an important 3-1 victory against Phoenix as part of their recent playoff push in a clash between two teams battling to rejoin the Western Conference playoff picture. David Perron, Jay McClement and Andy McDonald tallied scores for the Blues, who won their third consecutive game and sixth in their last eight. The Blues will host Detroit tomorrow night.

Brian Barton drilled a pair of two-run homers, as the St. Louis Cardinals outslugged the Florida Marlins, 14-10, in Grapefruit League play. Barton finished with three hits and six RBI, while Joe Mather drove in three runs for the Cardinals. Khalil Greene recorded three hits in four plate appearances. Joel Pineiro got the start and allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work. Kyle McClellan and Brad Thompson each surrendered three runs in relief.

Mike Napoli and Freddy Sandoval each drove in a pair of runs, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim topped the Kansas City Royals, 6-4, in Cactus League action. David DeJesus went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI for the Royals in defeat. Gil Meche gave up three runs on four hits and a walk in an inning, while Brandon Duckworth allowed a run on two hits and two walks in two frames.

The Kansas City Royals signed pitcher Juan Cruz to a two-year contract on Saturday. The deal also includes a club option for 2011.The right-hander has been used as both a reliever and starter in his eight seasons in the majors. In 2008, the 30-year-old appeared in 57 games out of the bullpen for Arizona, going 4-0 with a career-best 2.61 earned run average. The Royal's also designated infielder Esteban German for assignment.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed 17 players to one-year contracts, the club announced Saturday, including outfielder Skip Schumaker and infielder Brendan Ryan. Also signed were pitchers Mitchell Boggs, Jaime Garcia, Blake Hawksworth, Josh Kinney, Charlie Manning, Kyle McClellan, Jason Motte, Chris Perez and Matt Scherer; infielders Brian Barden, Tyler Greene and Jarrett Hoffpauir; and outfielders Brian Barton, Joe Mather, and Nick Stavinoha.

Funeral services for Charles "Charlie" Raymond Jones of Cuba, formerly of Steelville, age 77, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Richard Charles Schulte of Rolla, age 88, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Springfield on Tuesday at 1:00. Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick Church in Rolla.

Funeral services for Inez Alice Cox of Dyer, Indiana, formerly of Steelville, age 86, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Young of Licking, age 89, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jerry Dodson officiating. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Shafer Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass for Arthur (Art) Stephens, Jr. of Salem, age 62, will be held Wednesday at 6:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Etta Mae Perkins of Rolla, age 80, will be held Thursday moring at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday night. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Dixon. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
