The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Willis Stagner was in to see if the county surveyor had ever established the corners of a cemetery on the edge of the City of Salem that had been deeded to the county. Presiding Commissioner Skiles said that he didn’t think he had and would call Craig Ruble to follow up on that. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that patch grading would be done on Dent County Road 6670. He said that materials would be added and the workers would try to patch grade county roads 2440 and 2470. He reported that the county had received the second payment from the US Forest Service of $27,577.10 for their portion of the Swiney Bridge Project on Dent County Road 5680. Purcell again wanted to let people know who have cell phones that live in the county outside the city limits of Salem that they should not be paying a Salem city tax on their bills. Each person will need to call the customer service number on your cell phone bill to get that corrected. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that patch grading would be done on several county roads that had areas washed out. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3190 and materials would be added to Dent County Road 3175. He said that a man would be screening brown rock, and that workers were fixing snow chains and putting on end bits on Grader #32. Commissioners Purcell and Larson both reported that the county radios are being reprogrammed to narrow band in compliance with FCC regulations. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he, Commissioners Larson and Purcell and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley attended the health insurance consortium meeting on Wednesday in Springfield to review the changes as a result of the Affordable Health Care Act and how it would affect the cost of the county health insurance. He said that there would be an increase in cost. County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to register to vote in the April election would be March 6th, and that she received a grant from the Help America Vote Act of $4,581 to help pay for new poll pads for each poll location. The grant covered about one-half of the costs. At the last meeting, it was reported that the county had not received any bids on purchasing a used dump truck. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 1:25 early Thursday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about two miles west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 21-year old Amanda Mirabile of Licking was traveling westbound on highway 32, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled across the left side of the roadway, struck a tree and a mobile home. Mirabile suffered serious injury and was transported to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was totaled and removed from the scene by A1 Towing of Houston.
Highway 72 in Dent and Reynolds Counties will be reduced to one lane as contractor crews perform asphalt paving and bridgework. Crews will perform asphalt paving of the roadway from Highway 32 in Dent County to Route TT in Reynolds County. Weather permitting work will take place Monday, March 4th through Friday, June 28th from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The work zone will be marked with signs. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers season came to an end at the hands of a very talented Hillcrest team Thursday in Marshfield, 82-41, in the District semi-final. Chad Elliott led all Salem scorers with 14 points followed by Brady Floyd with 11 points. The Boys finished with a record of 12-15 on the year.
Jabari Brown scored 23 points in 23 minutes as the Missouri Tigers crushed the South Carolina Gamecocks, 90-68, in SEC action at Colonial Life Arena. Brown added five assists for the Tigers (20-8, 9-6 SEC) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. Keion Bell led all scorers with 24 points, while Alex Oriakhi pitched in with 18 points. Missouri will host LSU on Saturday at 3:00 and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO following the Cardinal game.
Corey Crawford and Ray Emery combined on a 21-save shutout as the Chicago Blackhawks kept their historic start rolling with a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday at Scottrade Center. Jaroslav Halak allowed all three goals on 23 shots for the Blues, who have dropped three of their last four games. The Blues will host the Edmonton Oilers tonight. You’ll be able to hear that game on KSMO, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.
Oscar Taveras clubbed a grand slam to highlight a six-run first inning that the St. Louis Cardinals rode to an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins in Grapefruit League action Thursday. The Cards will play the Astros today at 12:05. St. Louis will also play the Nationals on Saturday and Sunday. KSMO will broadcast Saturday’s game at 11:55 and Sunday’s at 11:45.
James Shields threw one perfect inning in his Kansas City Royals spring debut to help his new team to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres in a Cactus League matchup. The Royals will play the Reds this afternoon at 2:05.

Funeral services for Calvin “Cab” Wright, age 84, of St. James, formerly of Steelville, will be Monday at 11:00 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Steelville. Memorials may be given to the St. James First Baptist Church Choir Robe Fund.
