Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded no traffic fatalities during the month of January. This is two less than January 2012. There were a total of 157 accidents with 47 injuries and two fatalities for January 2012 compared to 137 accidents with 47 injuries with no fatalities for January 2013. In Crawford County, there were 19 accidents and 10 injuries reported while in Dent County, there were 14 accidents with two injuries reported. There were 27 accidents with 10 injuries recorded in Laclede County and there were 32 accidents with 10 injuries in Phelps County. In Maries County, there were six accidents and one injury recorded during January while in Pulaski County, there were 39 accidents with 14 injuries reported.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital is conducting a federally mandated survey to determine if our community’s health needs are being met, and if not, why. Surveys are available at the hospital, various employers, churches and civic organizations around town. You may also go the hospital website at www.smdh.net and click on the Community Needs Assessment link to complete the survey on-line. The deadline to submit a survey is March 10th. Survey results will be released to the public along with a plan to address the needs identified through the survey. Your input is essential to the success of this process. The 2013 Business Expo will be held from 9:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 6th at the Salem High School gymnasium. The Business Expo is an exceptional opportunity for area businesses to advertise their products and services, according to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The expo is organized by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Salem Publishing Company and KSMO. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo is the areas business trade show. Were hundreds of people attend to see what local businesses have to offer in the way of products and services. The annual Expo is free to the public. Salem Area Chamber of Commerce members receive one booth space (10 foot by 6 foot) at no charge. Additional booth spaces are $35 each. The booth space fee for non-chamber members is $135. There will also be a drawing to be awarded a “premier” booth space location on March 12th. Businesses may bring their entry form to the chamber membership luncheon meeting on that day. No sales exchanges are allowed at the Business Expo, however attendees may place orders for products or services. There will be food concessions in the cafeteria during the event. Businesses that plan on giving prizes valued at $250 or more are asked to contact the chamber office in order to take full advantage of name recognition in the Expo advertising in the Salem News and on KSMO Radio. The Missouri Highway Patrol released several arrest reports. On Wednesday, February 20th at 11:15 in the morning, 36-year old Cherise Garcia of Salem was arrested in Phelps County and charged with a misdemeanor Maries County warrant for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and no seat belt. She was released on bond. On Saturday, February 23rd at 5:34 in the evening, 49-year old Diane Odom on Licking was arrested in Phelps County for driving while intoxicated and speeding. She was then released. On Sunday, February 24th at 12:05 in the early morning, 26-year old Lance Marty and 25-year old Thomas Lewis of Steelville and 22-year old Logan Eaton of Cherryville, were arrested and charged with assault. All three were put on a 24-hour hold in the Crawford County Jail. Later that same morning early at 1:32 in Phelps County, 32-year old Aaron Stratman of Rolla was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was then released.

Highway 72 in Dent and Reynolds Counties will be reduced to one lane as contractor crews perform asphalt paving and bridgework. Crews will perform asphalt paving of the roadway from Highway 32 in Dent County to Route TT in Reynolds County. Weather permitting work will take place Monday, March 4th through Friday, June 28th from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The work zone will be marked with signs. The start time for the Salem Tiger Basketball District game against Hillcrest at Marshfield tonight has been pushed back to 7:00 due to the cancellation of the girls’ semi-final games on Tuesday. Salem enters the game with 12-14 record. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Bunker Lady Eagle basketball team lost in Sectional play Tuesday night by the score of 70-39 to the Chadwick Lady Cardinals.

Shane Robinson went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI, as the heavy-hitting St. Louis Cardinals eased past the New York Mets, 12-4, Wednesday in spring training action. Lance Lynn picked up the win, striking out three batters and allowing four hits in two innings of work. The Cardinals will play the Miami Marlins this afternoon at 12:05.

Max Ramirez knocked in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in Cactus League action on Wednesday. Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas added one RBI apiece for the Royals, who moved to 5-0 in exhibition games this season. Luke Hochevar started for the Royals and gave up two runs on one hit and three walks while striking out two over 1 2/3 innings. Kansas City will play the Padres this afternoon at 2:05.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team will play at South Carolina tonight at 8:00. Missouri is 19-8 on the year. You’ll be able the game joined in progress following the Salem game on KSMO.

The St. Louis Blues will host the NHL best Chicago Blackhawks tonight at 7:00 at the Scottrade Center. St. Louis has a record of 10-6-2 on the year.

Funeral services for Ida Irene Paine of Salem, age 84, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery.

Funeral services for Elaine M. Westerveld of Edgar Springs, age 92, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Licking. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Friday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Beulah Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Robert Matthews of St. James, age 85, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00.

Funeral services for Rose Bailey of Steelville, age 83, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Upper Indian Creek Cemetery in Viburnum. Memorials may be made to the United Baptist Church in Steelville.

Funeral services for Euretha Shepard of Salem, age 81, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday night. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Masonic Lodge #225.

Funeral services for Nova Mounce of Salem, age 91, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 Friday evening. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
