It's that time of year again to get your fishing gear ready, and pull out the waders and practice your casting techniques in preparation to land a lunker on opening day of trout season. At 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, the siren will sound and trout season will officially begin at Meramac Spring Park in St. James, Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon and Montauk State Park near Salem. Trout catch-and-keep fishing season runs each year through Oct. 31. With the weekend just around the corner, Missouri Department of Natural Resources officials expect good crowds for trout opening. It is anticipated that approximately 6,500 trout tags will be sold at the three state parks. Trout tags can be purchased at the state park concession stores. Although trout fishing will be the main activity at the three parks on opening day, the parks also offer other opportunities, including hiking and learning about the parks through exhibits in the interpretive and nature centers. There was a lot of work that occurred during the winter months at Montauk State Park as repairs were completed on rental cabin roofs and the shower houses were painted. Three stream habitat and erosion-control projects have also been completed to enhance fishing opportunities. Bank stabilization along the Bluff Spring Branch makes the fishable area larger and safer. Trout season in Missouri is a cooperative effort of the Department of Natural Resources, which manages state parks, and the Missouri Department of Conservation, which operates the hatcheries and stocks the streams with trout. The Conservation Department is encouraging the “I Released a Lunker” program which will provide a patch to sew on fishing vests for anglers who return fish 18 inches or longer to the water. Anglers who catch and release lunkers at the parks get a Grand Slam Patch around which the other four patches can be sewn. To qualify, you must immediately release the fish in good condition and have a witness to verify the release. Also the First Fish Award Program for first-time anglers, recognizes the importance of a first fishing experience with a certificate suitable for framing. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association held their Gift of Time Awards Banquet last evening at the Youth Building at The Commons. Recognized with the Gift of Time Honor Roll Certificates were Shirley Banks, Carol Davis, Gary Larson, Nancy Midyett, Ruth Ann Parker, Vickie Ruble, Kim Stephens, Bob Thompson, Virginia West, Charles Whitmire and Jim and Nancy Moenster. Organizations that received the Gift of Time Certificates were the Dent County 4-H leaders, the Dent County Strings (now the Over the Hillbillies) and the Salem Rotary Club. Awarded the Gift of Time Award Plaques were Carol Davis for Arts and Culture for the Trees and Trains Display at the ONCRC, Jim and Nancy Moenster for Community Enhancement for the Craig Plaza Renovation, Kim Stephens for Education and her work in getting books to children and fundraisers with the Salem Public Library, and Shirley Banks for her work with the Salem Girls Scouts. All three organizations were awarded the Gift of Time Award plaques. The Dent County Strings were saluted for Community Enhancement as they go to nursing homes and play music for the folks who can’t get out, the Salem Rotary Club were honored in the Humanitarian category for the work they do in the community behind the scenes with Foster care, scholarships and more; and the Dent County 4-H Leaders were saluted in the Youth category for the hard work and countless hours dedicated to serving the young people in the county. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association wants to thank all these groups and the many others who give their time unselfishly for the betterment of others in our community.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will face the Lady Crusaders of Lutheran South tonight at 7:45 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro in Sectional play tonight. The Salem 6^th Grade Lady Basketball Team that won the five-team pool in Columbia this past weekend that qualified them for the Show-Me Games to be held in Branson on March 13^th and 18^th is coached by Dee Moser and Gene Toman and not by Shonda Wallace. We apologize for the error.

The Missouri Tigers will face the Colorado Buffaloes tonight starting at 5:30 on KSMO. Missouri enters the game with a 19-8 record overall and 6-8 in the Big 12.

Doug Weight scored two goals as the St. Louis Blues downed the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1, at Scottrade Center. David Backes added a goal and an assist and Curtis Sanford made 25 saves for the Blues, who have won five of their last six games. The Blues play at the Islanders on Thursday at 6:30.

The Blues acquired forward Brad Boyes from the Boston Bruins for defenseman Dennis Wideman, and dealt forward Bill Guerin to the San Jose Sharks for left wing Ville Nieminen, prospect Jay Barriball and a first-round pick in the 2007 draft. Before the game last night, the Blues gave forward Jamal Mayers a three-year contract extension.

St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday. No immediate timetable was given on his return.

The defending world champion St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Yadier Molina and reliever Adam Wainwright among a slew of 18 total players, all to one-year deals, the team announced Tuesday. The 16 other signings meant that the Cardinals now have every player on their 40-man roster under contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms on a three-year contract with QB Damon Huard on Tuesday. Per team policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Funeral services for Venita Imogene Voight of Rolla, age 77, will be held tomorrow at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 6;00 to 9;00 tonight. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Rescue League in Rolla.

Funeral services for Pearl Wave Hogan of Salem, age 83, will be held tomorrow at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery at Dillard, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Hogan family.

Funeral services for Raymond S. Davis of St. James, age 86 will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the High Gate Baptist Cemetery in High Gate. Memorials are suggested to the High Gate Baptist Church or Cemetery.

Funeral services for John Michael Frieders of Salem, formerly of Aurora, Illinois, age 50, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
