Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell wants to remind everyone that their Personal Property Assessment List is due March 1st. The asessment list was sent out in the same envelope as your tax bill back in November. Every person, corporation, partnership or association that is subject to taxes in Missouri that owns tangible personal property within the county is required to submit an assessment list. The property that needs to be listed is property that is owned or controlled as of January 1st, 2013. If you don’t have an assessment list, you may pick one up at the Dent Conty Assessor’s Office in the Dent County Courthouse. Penalties shall be issued based on the assessed valuation of property that was not reported at $10 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That penalty would be added to your tax bill. March 1st marks the opening of catch-and-keep trout fishing at Montauk State Park between Salem and Licking, and Maramec Spring Park near St. James. The long-range weather forecast for March 1st points to chilly but not unseasonably cold weather, with high temperatures in the 40s and a small chance of rain. Montauk Hatchery Manager Tom Whelan is expecting 2,500 anglers or more on opening day and plans to stock 7,500 trout, including 50 lunkers. Gov. Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon is expected to fire the pistol to kick off the season there. At Maramec Spring Park, hatchery manager Wesley Swee is planning for 1,500 anglers for opening day and will stock 4,500 trout, plus 50 lunkers. The honor of firing the starting pistol at Maramec goes to Gary Benson this year. He has been fishing at Maramec Spring for more than 50 years and supports kids’ fishing there both as a volunteer and with donations of fishing supplies for youngsters’ use. The three Missouri’s trout parks–Bennett Spring, Montauk, and Roaring River–are owned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Maramec Spring Park is owned by the James Foundation. Missouri residents 16 through 64 need a fishing permit in addition to the daily tag. Non-residents 16 and older also need a fishing permit.
The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) held its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 26th. The dinner was held at The Gathering Place in the Grace Community Church and started out with a special recognition award being presented to Jerry and Carolyn Lough and his family in allowing the Youth Livestock Committee to use the Oakwood Mule Farm for the 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction in 2012. The “Gift of Time” Awards for individuals were then presented to Thom Haines in the Education category, Mike and Dianne Godi for Community Enhancement, Rachel Kitchens in the adult serving youth category, Matt Sirois for being a youth who serves young people, Cindy Stluka in the Humanitarian category and Deloris Gray Wood in Historic Preservation. The “Gift of Time” Awards for organizations went to the Salem Public Library Board in the Education category, the American Legion Post #99 for Community Enhancement and Project Win for Humanitarian efforts. Other people and organizations nominated and added to the “Gift of Time” honor roll included Shawn Bolerjack, Jim and Diane Boulware, Brock Cook, Philip Giacomelli, George and Liz Gruendel, Dennis Hayman, Brad Pryor, Julie Salyer, Healthy Dent County and the Salem United Methodist Church. Congratulations to all those who were nominated, and a special congratulations to those selected this year to receive the “Gift of Time” awards.
Many hunting and fishing permits will expire at the end of February, including 2012 permits for small game, fishing, trout fishing and the combination permit for hunting and fishing. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds hunters and anglers to purchase their 2013 permits so they won’t miss opportunities in the year ahead. The Missouri Department of Conservation makes buying permits for these activities simple and convenient through its online system called e-Permits. E-Permits lets Missouri sport hunters, anglers and trappers purchase, print and immediately use most permits 24/7 from a personal computer with a printer. Simply visit mdc.mo.gov and click on “Buy Permits” from the MDC home page. All sport-fishing and sport-hunting permits are available through e-Permits, along with trapping permits and the Apprentice Hunter Authorization. Commercial permits and lifetime permits will continue to be sold through MDC’s Central Office by calling 573-751-4115. People can still buy permits from vendors, and by phone by calling toll-free 1-800-392-4115. Allow up to ten days for mail delivery of permits purchased by telephone. Phone purchases are subject to a $2 convenience fee, while the fee for online permit purchases is $1. E-Permits are printed on regular printer paper and can be saved on a computer so extra copies of permits can be printed in case one is lost or destroyed. Permits may not be shared, and additional copies of a permit do not provide additional valid permits for the buyer or others to use.

The start time for Thursday’s Salem Tiger Basketball District game against Hillcrest at Marshfield has been pushed back to 7:00 due to the cancellation of the girls semi-final games on Tuesday. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
The Salem 8th Grade Girls Basketball Traveling Team took 3rd Place at the Show-Me State Games this past weekend. In the first game, Salem lost to the St. Louis Force Elite, 41-40 with Baylee Bilyeu scoring 17 points. In the second game, Salem beat the Bullets from Elmer, 63-17 as Payton Curley netted 15 points before the Lady Tigers lost to the Washington Blue Jays by the score of 49-30. Camryn Pryor and Baylee Bilyeu each scored nine points in that game for Salem. In the fourth game, Salem defeated the Mid-Mo Shooters, 38-20 with Payton Curley leading the way with nine points. In the last game, Camryn Pryor scored 14 points for the Lady Tigers, but Salem couldn’t hold off the Washington Blue Jays, 39-34. Congratulations Tigers on a great tournament!
Tony Cruz, Ryan Jackson and Matt Adams all drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals recorded a 15-4 rout of the Boston Red Sox in Grapefruit League action. The Cardinals will play the New York Mets this afternoon at 12:10.
Billy Butler went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Indians in a Cactus League matchup on Tuesday. The Royals will play the Brewers this afternoon at 2:05.

Funeral services for Ida Irene Paine of Salem, age 84, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Berry Cemetery.
Funeral services for Elaine M. Westerveld of Edgar Springs, age 92, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the United Methodist Church in Licking. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Friday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Beulah Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
