Former Salem R-80 teacher and coach Dusty Arzt pled guilty Thursday to a Class C felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child thereby avoided a trial on a Class C felony charge of statutory rape that was to begin today in the Iron County Circuit Court in front of Judge Kelly Parker. Arzt was charged with statutory rape following the investigation of two alleged incidents that occurred in November of 2008 and January of 2009 at the Waggoner Cemetery near Salem where he supposedly had sexual intercourse with a 14-year old female juvenile. Judge Parker suspended the imposition of the sentence and placed Arzt on five years probation supervised by the Department of Corrections, Board of Probation and Parole. The conditions of the probation state that Arzt must undergo a sex offender evaluation and complete all follow-up recommendations made after that evaluation. He must also consent to a search of his residence, person and automobile at the request of any probation officer or law enforcement officer; and at the discretion of his supervising probation officer, he may have to serve 120 days shock time in the county jail.

An accident occurred at 6:40 Friday evening in Shannon County on Highway 19 about twenty miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Jeep driven by 68-year old John Rostron of Salem ran off the roadway and struck a tree. Rostron suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 10:15 Thursday morning in Phelps County on Highway 63 and county road 2000 just North of the Rolla City limits. According to the highway patrol report, a 1989 Ford driven by 59-year old William Doyel of Rolla was crossing highway 63 from county road 2000. A 2007 Ford driven by 70-year old Ramona Thompson of Licking that was northbound on highway 63 and struck the Ford from behind. Both drivers suffered minor injuries and will seek their own treatment. The 1989 Ford sustained minor damage and was removed by the owner. The 2007 Ford sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing.

An accident occurred Thursday morning at 10:05 in Dent County on Dent County Road 2030 about a half mile South of Lacoma. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Ford Focus driven by 56-year old Nancy Heath of Edgar Springs was traveling northbound on county road 2030. The Ford Focus drove off the left side of the road, struck several small trees and then returned to the roadway. Heath suffered moderate injuries and was flown to Cox Hospital in Springfield. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Focus sustained minor damage and was towed to Hi-Tech Collision by Dishman’s Towing.

Time is of the essence if you would like to be a part of fundraiser to help raise funds for the “Shop with a Cop” program. The Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department are sponsoring this fundraiser that will be in the form of an 8 by 10 inch studio quality “classic vintage” color children portrait featuring traditional costumes and props. The portrait will be of children up to 12 years of age. In order to participate in this special fundraiser, parents will need to get a certificate, fill out the stub and submit it with $10. Appointments will be made and photos will be taken on March 2^nd or 3^rd between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM in Salem. Certificates will be available at the Salem Police Department and Dent County Sheriff’s Department. The stubs and the $10 payment may be made at the Salem Police Department or Dent County Sheriff’s Department. There is a limit of one certificate per household. Parents will receive the 8 by 10 photo when they come to review the photos. At that time, parents can select different packages of photos of the children, but parents are not obligated to buy anything. Tyshawn Taylor nailed a pair of foul shots with eight seconds remaining in overtime, lifting 4^th-ranked Kansas to a thrilling 87-86 win over 3^rd-ranked Missouri in the final Big 12 regular season edition of the Border War on Saturday. Missouri was unable to get a shot off in the final eight seconds. Taylor's free throws came right after Marcus Denmon gave the Tigers a one-point advantage with a floater along the right baseline with 12 seconds left. Denmon scored eight of his 28 points in overtime while Ricardo Ratliffe provided 22 points and 12 boards for Missouri (25-4, 12-4), which lost its second consecutive game. Missouri will host Iowa State on Wednesday.

David Perron netted the winner in the fourth round of the shootout to send St. Louis over Winnipeg, 3-2, at MTS Centre on Saturday. David Backes and Perron tallied in regulation for the Blues, who have won two in a row and four of six. Halak ended with 39 saves. The Blues will be in Calgary tonight to face the Flames at 8:00 and you’ll be able to hear it on KSMO Radio.

Monster World Rally Team's Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino piloted their 2012 Ford Fiesta to their sixth Rally in the 100 Acre Wood title February 24-25^thin Salem. The team won 15 of the 17 stages in a hard-fought battle on the extremely fast Ozark Mountain roads and squeaked out a 29.3 second victory over Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins and Craig Drew. From the very beginning Block set a blistering pace outpacing his rivals to lead after day one. On the first leg of the second day, Block lost time to Higgins with a pair of tire punctures and suspension damage. After service, the team made up their lost time and pushed hard during the last two stages to secure the victory.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with shortstop Alcides Escobar and second baseman Johnny Giavotella.

Funeral services for Tove L. Hughley of Salem, age 86, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:00 with the Rosary recited at 6:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Riverways Pregnancy Center of Salem or the Phelps County Regional Homecare of Rolla.
