The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crews would be repairing roads that had been part of this past weekends road rally. Simpson said repairs would be done on Dent County Roads 538, 654, and 669 where minor damage was reported, and on Dent County Road 536 where moderate damage was reported.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that conditions are too wet for grading, so crews are hauling white rock to Dent County Roads 525 and 526, and cutting brush on Dent County Road 522. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that a public hearing would be held in Reynolds County on March 19th to discuss a Community Development Block Grant; Skiles said that Commissioner Simpson would be there to represent Dent County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that March 7th is the last day to register to vote for the April 3rd Municipal Election.  Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks stopped by the meeting to let the Commission know that she hired Beverly Irons as a full time employee. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred last Thursday evening at 7:58 on Highway 32 and Askins in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a green 1999 Dodge Ram driven by Christopher Roberts of Salem was traveling west on highway 32, preparing to turn left into the Wal-Mart parking lot. Traveling east on highway 32 was a red 1993 Chevy Corsica driven by Danielle Quinn of Salem and owned by Sue Quinn of Bunker. The Dodge Ram turned into the path of the Chevy Corsica and the vehicles collided in the intersection. 20-year old Quinn and a passenger, 24-year old Aaron Berlin were transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene. The Dodge Ram was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing, and the Chevy Corsica was towed from the scene by Knight Towing.

An accident occurred Sunday evening at 9:35 on Dent County Road 326 about three miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford Escort driven by 24-year old Amy Barnard of Salem was traveling eastbound, failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and a tree. Barnard suffered minor injuries, and passenger, 3-year old Rebecca Riechard, her daughter, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Escort sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitaker Towing of Salem. Barnard was cited for careless and imprudent driving.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will announce the winners of their Gift of Time Awards tonight at their annual dinner at 6:30 at The Commons Youth Building. The nominees include these individuals: Shirley Banks, Carol Davis, Gary Larson, Nancy Midyett, Jim and Nancy Moenster, Ruth Ann Parker, Vickie Ruble, Kim Stephens, Bob Thompson, Virginia West and Charles Whitmire. Three organizations were also nominated for Gift of Time awards and they were the Dent County   4-H Club leaders, the Dent County Strings and the Salem Rotary Club. These individuals and organizations were nominated for their volunteer efforts during the calendar year 2006. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association also sends out a big “thank you” to those volunteers not nominated this year, but whose efforts are greatly appreciated.

The Salem 6th Grade Lady Basketball Team won a five-team pool in Columbia this past weekend that qualified them for the Show-Me Games to be held in Branson on March 13th and 18th. The 6th Grade Lady Tigers had to beat the Potosi Swish, an AAU team, to win the pool. Salem held them scoreless in the 4th quarter while scoring eight points themselves en route to a four-point win and the chance to compete in the Show-me games. The team is now 27-9 on the year and they are coached by Dee Moser and Shonda Wallace. Congratulations team!

The Salem 8th Grade Volleyball “A” Team defeated Northwood R-4 last Thursday in two straight games by the scores of 25-2 and 25-2. Kristy Bermudez was the leading server with 18 and 19 points respectively in the two Salem wins. The 8th grade “B” team lost to Northwood, 25-5 in their match.

The Salem 7th Grade Lady Volleyball Team took 2nd place in the Dixon Tournament held on Saturday. To get to the championship game, Salem defeated Bourbon by the score of 25-17 and 25-18 with Jacy Lashley the leading server with 13 points. The Lady Tigers then beat Laquey, 25-10 and 25-16 with Crystal Prince the leading server with 14 points. The Lady Tigers finished pool play with a 25-7 and 25-22 wins over Dixon with Jacy Lashley the leading server with 14 points. The Championship match went to Belle with Salem winning the first game, 25-15, the Belle won the next two games, 25-16 and 25-21. Salem’s leading server in the championship match was Crystal prince with 10 points and Leah Whelan with nine points.

The St. Louis Blues will face the Vancouver Canucks at the Scottrade Center starting at 7:00 tonight. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Florida Atlantic College team yesterday afternoon using almost all minor league players, 3-2. KSMO will air the Sunday afternoon pre-season game with the Florida Marlins at 11:45.

Funeral services for Esther Irene Schafer of Salem, age 86, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Veda Lorene Larez of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Veteran’s Home.

Funeral services for Venita Imogene Voight of Rolla, age 77, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held Wednesday night from 6:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Rescue League in Rolla.

Funeral services for Pearl Wave Hogan of Salem, age 83, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Wednesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery at Dillard, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Hogan family.
