This Sunday, March 1st, marks the opening of catch-and-keep trout fishing at the Show-Me State’s four trout parks: Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Montauk State Park near Licking, Roaring River State Park near Cassville, and Maramec Spring Park near St. James. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) permit records show that weekend trout park openers can draw crowds of more than 10,000 anglers. The Department of Conservation operates trout hatcheries at all four parks. To help predict angler turnout on opening day, hatchery staff rely on permit records going back more than 70 years. Montauk, Bennett Spring, and Roaring River hatchery staff expect crowds of about 3,000 anglers at each location, weather permitting, and Maramec Spring staff are planning for a crowd of about 2,000. Based on these predictions, the hatchery staff will stock three trout per expected angler on opening day for a total of more than 33,000 fish averaging around a foot in length. The hatcheries will also stock several hundred “lunkers” ranging from three to 10 pounds. Three of the trout parks – Bennett Spring, Montauk, and Roaring River – are owned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The Maramec Spring Park is owned by the James Foundation. All anglers will need a daily trout tag to fish in Missouri’s trout parks. The daily trout tags can only be purchased at each of the four trout parks. All Missouri residents’ ages 16 through 64 will need a fishing permit in addition to the daily trout tag. All non-residents who are 16-years of age and older will also need a fishing permit.

The Rally in the 100-Acre Wood is the second race of the Rally America National Championship and is known as one of the most scenic. Named after the storybook home of Winnie the Pooh, the Rally in the 100-Acre Wood is a picturesque race with enough twists and turns to test every driver’s ability. Set in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains of Missouri this race is always a driver favorite due to its pristine surroundings and fast, tight roads. Although you won’t see Winnie the Pooh or any of his friends, you will see some of the best rally driving on some of the best rally roads in North America. The Rally offers many opportunities for spectators to interact with the drivers & crew at the Parc Exposes, watch the cars drive the stages at the spectator locations, and see the crew make repairs to their cars in the service area at the Steelville School on Friday and at The Commons on Saturday, and all free of charge. There are 64 entries in the rally. The activities start Friday at the Potosi Lions Park where the Parc Expose and Welcome Ceremony will be held starting at noon. The first leg will end at the Steelville High School between 8:10 and 9:10 Friday night. There are three spectator locations Friday including the one at the Potosi Lions Park. On Saturday, the Parc Expose and Welcome will be held in downtown Salem from 8:30 until 10:00. In addition, parking is a problem on the forest’s narrow roads.  Do not double-park and block these roads. All cars must park on the same side of the road. One side of the road must be kept clear and open for traffic. This is used as an access route for emergency vehicles. Please follow the marshal’s directions when parking your car and please respect the Spectator Control Marshals. They work very long hours to ensure your safety and viewing enjoyment. There will be three spectator locations in Dent County and one in Crawford County on Crooked Tower Road near Dillard for the rally on Saturday. The race will come to an end at the Courthouse Square in downtown Salem between 7:30 and 8:30. This is the 14th consecutive year for the Rally that was restarted in 2002 after being stopped following the 1983 race.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. There were five calls for first half of February. On Sunday, February 1^st, a call came in at 10:03 pm for a passenger vehicle fire on Dent County Road 3290. A total of seven fire fighters responded to find a 2006 Ford 500 that was fully involved. A deputy with the Dent County Sheriff’s office was already on the scene and had the scene secured. Fire suppression quickly took place and the incident was under control at 10:46 that same night. All units were back in service at 11:20 that night. On Tuesday, February 3^rd at 11:40 pm, a call came in for a building fire on West Fourth Street in Salem. A total of nine fire fighters responded and extinguished the fire. All units were back in service at 1:12 the next morning. Then on Thursday, February 5^th a call came in at 7:00 pm for training at the station and a total of 13 fire fighters responded to the training call. On Sunday, February 8^th at 3:12 in the afternoon, a total of six fire fighters responded to County Road 3270 for a grass fire. Fire fighters established fire lines for the wildfire and all units were back in service at 4:10 that same afternoon. Then on Wednesday, February 11^th at 8:44 at night, a total of nine fire fighters responded to on Highway 19 North and no incident was found on arrival. All units were back in service at 9:15 that night.

Phelps County Master Gardeners are hosting a day of education on Saturday March 21^st at the Missouri University of Science & Technology’s Havener Center, 1346 N. Bishop Avenue in Rolla, from 9:00am - noon, and 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Professionals in the Horticulture field, Master Gardeners, and Master Naturalist will teach classes on a number of fun and interesting topics. Participants can choose from: Container Gardening, Seed Starting, Backyard Berries, Native Plants, Vertical Gardening, Hoop Houses, Pollinators, Landscape Design, Four Season Gardening, Composting and Vermicomposting, Funky Containers, Climate Change, Pruning Shrubs and Trees, Cut Flowers and more The event is open to everyone. Cost is ten dollars for a set of morning classes and ten dollars for a set of afternoon classes.  The deadline for registration is March 6, 2015.  Seating is limited so please register early. Master Gardeners from around the region attending the seminar will be able to get credit to meet annual education and advanced training certification requirements. The St. Louis Blues will start a five game road trip with a game in Winnipeg tonight starting at 7:00. You can hear the pre-game show on KSMO Radio beginning at 6:30. The Blues have lost three of their last four games.

On Tuesday night, Namon Wright scored a career-high 28 points as the Missouri Tigers defeated the Florida Gators, 64-52, in SEC play at Mizzou Arena. Wright, the only Missouri (8-20, 2-13 SEC) player in double figures, converted 10-of-13 shots from the floor. The Tigers finally brought a 13-game losing streak to an end, winning for the first time since taking down LSU in overtime (74-67) back on Jan. 8. The skid was the longest in the 109-year history of the Missouri program. Missouri will face Georgia Saturday morning at 11:00 with the pre-game show on KSMO beginning at 10:30.

According to Athletic Director Phillip Karr, the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers MAY play tonight against Willow Springs in a makeup game to help determine the SCA Championship as the Lady Bears lost in district play last night to Houston, 55-52.
