Captain Randy Becker, Commanding Officer of Troop I Headquarters of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, wants to remind parents and caretakers in our communities, that all children should be placed in either a child safety seat, booster seat, or seatbelt, every time they ride in a car or truck. When placing a child safety seat or booster seat in your vehicle, be sure to read both the seat instructions and your vehicle owner’s manual. Remember, infants must always be placed in rear-facing seats until they are at least one year old and 20 pounds. Children at least one-year old between 20 and 40 pounds should be placed in forward-facing safety seats. Captain Becker would also like to remind everyone that Missouri law states children ages four to eight who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, and who are less than 4’9” tall, must be secured in a child passenger restraint seat or a booster seat appropriate for that child. Seatbelts alone are designed for adults or children over 80 pounds. Another safety reminder is that all children 12 or under should sit in the back seat. If you have questions concerning child safety seats, please contact the Dent County Health Center at 729-3106.
