The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of January showed an excess of revenues over expenses from operations of $337,617 for the month. Currently the hospital has $1.4 million in certificates of deposit in different banks. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month of January and there were 737 emergency room visits, 183 ambulance runs, 13 surgeries, 391 clinical visits, 210 home health visits, 7,854 lab tests, 1,254 radiological procedures, 33 MRI scans, 346 CT Scans, 120 dialysis procedures visits and 22 mammograms were performed. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor gave the Auxiliary report and they are working on putting together a cookbook for Mothers Day. Pryor explained that USDA would make a final decision regarding the Physicians Office Building loan in March. The board approved a budgeted purchase of a network attached storage server for the Information Systems Department for $1,750 from CDWG. They also approved several non-budgeted purchases. They include a printer for the Business Office for $299 from CDWG, a projector lamp for Administration for $431 from CDWG, a fax machine for the Emergency Room for $170 from Quill, four patient room chairs for the emergency room for $219 each from Automated Business Systems and an advanced injection arm simulator for $466 from Matrix Medical. The board also approved adding a voluntary employee vision plan from Vision Care Direct to the employee benefit package. This plan will be of no cost to the hospital and will be available to employees that wish to enroll. Dr. Bill McCoy is the local provider for this plan. The board acknowledged a $5,000 donation from the Judson Young Memorial Foundation and it will be used to make improvements to the Long Term Care nurses station. The board then went into closed session.

The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a couple of calls for brush fires on Thursday. The first call came in at 1:44 in the afternoon on Highway B at property owned by Matt Victor of Salem. Upon arrival firefighters found 45-50 acres burning. Mutual aid was required by the Montauk and Jadwin Fire Departments, and the Department of Conservation to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported. A total of 14 firefighters responded. The second call came in at 3:15 on County Road 224 at property owned by William Gee of Salem. Firefighters found a quarter of an acre on fire and mutual aid was called from the Lenox Fire Department. A total of 14 firefighters responded to the call.

Missourians who want to learn about wildlife biology and management can fulfill that ambition through eight 2½ hour “Missouri Master Wildlifer” training sessions. The courses are designed for landowners and wildlife enthusiasts who want to learn how to manage wildlife in forests, grasslands and farms. Sessions will run from 6:30 to 9:00 pm on consecutive Tuesdays and Thursdays starting tomorrow through March 22^nd at the Salem TCRC located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The total cost for all eight sessions is $85 per person (an additional $40 for spouse, sharing materials). Individual sessions are $20 per person or $30 for couples sharing materials. Kirsten Stephens and Natalie Howard each scored 15 points, and Allison Jones added 12 more as the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers advanced to sectionals for the first time since 1987 with a 46-43 win over the Owensville Dutchgirls Friday night. The lead changed hands 10 times in the fourth quarter of the close contest. Salem improved to 22-5 with the win and they will face the Lady Crusaders of Lutheran South Wednesday night at 7:45 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. Aleks Maric posted a game-high 31 points while hauling in a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers to an 82-77 victory over the Missouri Tigers in a Big 12 Conference clash. Stefhon Hannah scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers (19-8, 6-8), and Darryl Butterfield came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Matt Lawrence added 11 points, while Marshall Brown and Keon Lawrence chipped in 10 points apiece in the Missouri loss, which halted a three-game win streak.

On Friday, the St. Louis Blues have agreed to contract extensions with goaltender Manny Legace and defenseman Eric Brewer. Legace has agreed to a two-year deal, while Brewer has come to terms on a four-year extension.

On Sunday morning, the St. Louis Blues traded forward Keith Tkachuk to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for forward Glen Metropolit and what could amount to four draft picks. Metropolit, 32, has played in 57 games for Atlanta this season, recording 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists. The picks that St. Louis received in return include Atlanta's first and third round draft choices in 2007, and a second round draft choice in 2008. In addition, if Atlanta re-signs Tkachuk, the Blues will acquire a first-round draft selection in 2008.

Duncan Keith, Adrian Aucoin and Bryan Smolinski each scored first period goals as Chicago smoked the St. Louis Blues, 5-1. Martin Havlat posted a goal and two assists while Lee Stempniak scored the lone-goal for the Blues. St. Louis netminder Curtis Sanford gave up four goals on just 11 shots before being replaced by Jason Bacashihua in the third period. The Blues will face Vancouver Tuesday night at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Erma Louease Pewitt of Kalispell, Montana, formerly of Salem, age 77, will be held this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel at about 11:00. Visitation will begin at 10:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery at which time graveside services will also be held for L. Maurice Pewitt of Mesa, Arizona, age 77, who passed away in 1998.

Funeral services for Wilma Matlock of St. James, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Dillon Cemetery in Maries County. Memorials may be made to the Dillon Cemetery.

Funeral services for Esther Irene Schafer of Salem, age 86, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Veda Lorene Larez of Salem, age 86, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Veteran’s Home.
