Kirsten Stephens and Natalie Howard each scored 15 points, and Allison Jones added 12 more as the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers advanced to sectionals for the first time since 1987 with a 46-43 win over the Owensville Dutchgirls Friday night. The lead changed hands 10 times in the fourth quarter of the close contest. Salem improved to 22-5 with the win and they will face the Lady Crusaders of Lutheran South Wednesday night at 7:45 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. Aleks Maric posted a game-high 31 points while hauling in a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers to an 82-77 victory over the Missouri Tigers in a Big 12 Conference clash. Stefhon Hannah scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers (19-8, 6-8), and Darryl Butterfield came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Matt Lawrence added 11 points, while Marshall Brown and Keon Lawrence chipped in 10 points apiece in the Missouri loss, which halted a three-game win streak.
On Friday, the St. Louis Blues have agreed to contract extensions with goaltender Manny Legace and defenseman Eric Brewer. Legace has agreed to a two-year deal, while Brewer has come to terms on a four-year extension.
On Sunday morning, the St. Louis Blues traded forward Keith Tkachuk to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for forward Glen Metropolit and what could amount to four draft picks. Metropolit, 32, has played in 57 games for Atlanta this season, recording 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists. The picks that St. Louis received in return include Atlanta's first and third round draft choices in 2007, and a second round draft choice in 2008. In addition, if Atlanta re-signs Tkachuk, the Blues will acquire a first-round draft selection in 2008.
Duncan Keith, Adrian Aucoin and Bryan Smolinski each scored first period goals as Chicago smoked the St. Louis Blues, 5-1. Martin Havlat posted a goal and two assists while Lee Stempniak scored the lone-goal for the Blues. St. Louis netminder Curtis Sanford gave up four goals on just 11 shots before being replaced by Jason Bacashihua in the third period. The Blues will face Vancouver Tuesday night at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.
