The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, a shoplifter and a traffic stop. On Saturday, February 16th at 12:00 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that tenants of a rental property were moving from a residence. While in the process of moving, the manager of the property took possession of personal items in the residence valued at $1,640.00. Further investigation led to the arrest of the manager of the property, a 29-year old Salem male for stealing. He was released pending a review of the case by the Prosecuting Attorney. Later that afternoon at 5:35, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a 35-foot, dual axle dovetail Better Built trailer valued at $4,000 from the truck parking area on Babb Lane. Later that evening at 7:50 pm, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 37-year-old female of Bunker for stealing merchandise valued at $22.98. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday, February 17th at 1:57 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male on an active fugitive arrest warrant from Iron County. He was released with a date to appear in court after posting bond on the warrant. In closed session at the Salem R-80 Board of Education meeting on Thursday, the board unanimously approved extending the contracts for an additional one year for Superintendent Steve Carvajal, Assistant Superintendent John McColloch, High School Principal John Smith, High School Assistant Principal Scott Roberts, Junior High Principal Bobbie Jo Lewis, Junior High Assistant Principal Clay Moody, Upper Elementary Principal Melanie Wisdom, and William Lynch Elementary Principal Kriste Crocker. The meeting was then adjourned.
An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 1:32 in Dent County on Highway 72 about a mile north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 49-year Marilyn Barton of Salem, slowed for traffic and was struck from behind by a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by 18-year old Emily Smallwood of Salem. Barton suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Smallwood and Barton were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Ford Taurus sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Schwartz Auto Connection Towing while the Equinox had moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
An accident happened at 2:25 early Sunday morning on Highway 63 about three miles south of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Ford F-150 driven by 35-year old Timothy Holt of Edgar Springs, failed to negotiate a curve from a private drive and traveled into a ditch before striking a culvert where the truck came to rest. Holt suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. He was arrested for a first offense of driving while being intoxicated. He was taken to the Phelps County jail where he was released later. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford-F-150 had only minor damages.

The 3rd seeded Hillcrest Lady Hornets jumped out to 27-11 first quarter lead and coasted to a 71-46 win over the 6th seeded Salem Lady Tigers Saturday at Marshfield in District play. Savannah Hanning scored 29 points to lead the Lady Tigers even though she missed most of the 3rd quarter with a bloody nose. Hanning’s big game propelled her to a total of 300 points on the season. The Lady Tigers finished the year with a 9-17 record.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers have been seeded 4th in District play and will play the 5th seeded Eldon Mustangs at the Marshfield High School Gym tonight at 6:00. Admission to the game is $4.00 per person. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM and online at ksmoradio.com.
The slippery road conditions could not prevent Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins and Craig Drew from winning the Rally in the 100-Acre Wood held this past weekend in Salem. The hard fought victory gave Higgins his first 100-Acre Wood Rally victory in three attempts. On the first day, Higgins and Drew fell behind early to Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino and to Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard until a fateful stage 6, the first nighttime stage. Block suffered front-end damage and L'Estage retired from the event with overheating issues that left Higgins with the overall lead. Higgins then commanded a six-minute lead over Joseph Burk and Alex Kihurani in second place and Lauchlin O'Sullivan and Scott Putnam in third place. Higgins won 9 of the last 10 stages of the day towards his overall victory. Higgins is the reigning 2012 Rally America National Champion.
The Cards lost Saturday to Miami 8-3 before dropping a 5-3 decision to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday in pre-season baseball. The Cardinals will play the Astros this afternoon at 12:05.
David Perron scored in the third period to lift the St. Louis Blues over the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-1, on Saturday. Chris Stewart also scored for the Blues, who snapped a two-game skid. Jaroslav Halak made 18 saves. The victory comes just one day after St. Louis placed standout rookie Vladimir Tarasenko on injured reserve. Tarasenko suffered a concussion during Wednesday's 1-0 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Blues will host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
Julius Mayes led the way with 24 points, including eight points in the extra session, as the Kentucky Wildcats outlasted the Missouri Tigers in overtime, 90-83, in SEC action at Rupp Arena. Phil Pressey led all scorers with 27 points for the Tigers (19-8, 8-6), while Laurence Bowers chipped in with 13 points and Alex Oriakhi posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Pressey also handed out 10 assists and swiped four steals. The Missouri Tigers will play at South Carolina on Thursday.

Funeral services for Neoma Ruth Phillips of Salem, age 68, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Russell House.
Funeral services for Velma Leah Hutcheson of St. James, age 93, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 in the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of St. James.
