The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5610, and that rock was going to be hauled to Dent County Roads 5580 and 5600. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that gravel is being added to the soft spots in a number of roads, plus two workers are replacing missing signs in the Lenox area. Larson stated that a worker from his district and District 1 are working at the gravel plant. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he and Commissioner Larson attended the IDA Board meeting Wednesday night and discussed the IDA audit. Skiles then reported that Mark Collins form the CCAM Board told him about the Secure Rural Schools Act. Skiles said funding in the current year budget submitted by President Obama has the same funding as last year, but the government looks to phase out the program within the next five years. This would be a huge blow to the federal funding of the federal lands in the Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1 and Northwood R-4 school districts. Skiles said that he was in Jefferson City to testify in support of House Bill 115 that would make the Missouri Department of Conservation financially responsible for the damages to property from the reintroduction of elk in the Ozarks. Skiles said that Dent County landowner Bobby Simpson was also there to testify in favor of the house bill. Last year, the Commission submitted a letter to the Missouri Department of Conservation stating their position against the re-introduction of elk. Skiles indicated that a similar Senate Bill is also going to be introduced. Skiles presented to the Commission a draft letter to the West Plains Council on the Arts stating the county’s intent to opt out of the Ozark Highland National Heritage Area. All three commissioners reviewed the letter and approved sending it to US Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, US Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, State Senator Dan Brown and State Rep. Jason Smith. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to register to vote in the April 5th election would be March 9th, and that absentee voting is going on now. She also received a letter from B.A. Wilson, Inc. in regards to the bid they made to sell the county a 2002 Suburban. After the vehicle registration was submitted for insurance purposes, it was found the vehicle was actually a 2001 Suburban. Wilson said that they would reduce the bid $450 which is about the difference in the base price of a 2002 Suburban and a 2001 Suburban. The revised bid was then $11,050 and the commission approved the change. Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell is reminding everyone that your 2011 Assessment List is due no later than March 1st. There are financial penalties for submitting your assessment list late. If you have questions about the 2011 Assessment List, please call her office at 729-6010. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Coroner’s office released a report regarding a Salem resident. On Wednesday, February 23rd the Salem Police Department received a call and responded to Young Street in Salem. Dent County Deputy Coroner Eddie Wilson pronounced 41-year old Ronald Lee Mayes of Salem dead at 1:15 in the afternoon at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Mayes died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mayes body was taken to the Evans Funeral Home in Houston.

For children in need, a backpack full of supplies can make a difference at home and with classroom performance. Employees of The Doe Run Company’s Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) are helping to make that difference in five Southeast Missouri communities by donating more than $4,000 to various “backpack” programs. This month, BRRD is presenting five local schools with individual checks for $840 to benefit students in grades K-6 who have special economic needs. School recipients in Missouri included Salem Upper and Lower Elementary, Lesterville Elementary, Bunker Elementary, Viburnum Elementary and Steelville Elementary. The Doe Run donation was raised by BRRD employees, who created themed gift baskets full of purchased or donated items. The baskets were then auctioned off during the division holiday party. Basket themes ranged from sports tickets and golf-themed baskets to cooking- or spa-themed baskets. One basket contained $800 worth of gift cards donated by employees who earned them for achieving safety milestones. In Dent County Schools alone, the program has grown more than tenfold in one year from serving 10 families a week in 2009 to 119 families today. Backpack programs vary based on needs and may provide essential food and hygiene items, blankets, coats and clothing.

State Senator Dan Brown of Rolla, announced that his office is continuing a series of listening posts around the 16th District. A listening post will be held today from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Dent County at the Salem Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce office located at 200 South Main Street. Senator Brown welcomes questions and comments from constituents and can be reached by calling his Capitol office at (573) 751-5713.
