A couple of accidents happened Wednesday, February 24^th in the morning hours. At 8:05, an accident occurred in Dent County on Route O at Dent County Road 2135. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Dakota driven by 17-year old Shelly Barton of Salem, was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Route O, and pulled into the path a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by 49-year old Cynthia Camenisch of Lenox. Camenisch suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Dakota sustained moderate damage while the Chevrolet Impala was totaled. Whitaker’s Towing of Salem towed both vehicles from the scene. The second accident occurred at 9:45 in Phelps County on Highway 68 about a mile south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina driven by 52-year old Donald Whitaker of Salem, was traveling southbound on Highway 68, crossed the centerline and struck a 2001 Chevrolet pickup driven by 53-year old Lanny Wallis of St. James. Wallis suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Lumina sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Chevrolet pickup sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

The nation’s top teams are coming to the Rally in the 100-Acre Wood set in the beautiful woods surrounding the Salem, Steelville, Potosi, and Viburnum areas of southern Missouri. The 100-Acre Wood Rally is the second rally in the Rally America National Championship Series. Fans can expect a fierce battle for the overall lead. Four-time defending champion Travis Pastrana of Subaru Rally Team USA comes to the 100-Acre Wood Rally as the overall National points leader after winning the Sno-Drift Rally last month in Atlanta, Michigan. A collection of local Missouri drivers will compete on the same roads that the national teams will rally on. Regulars Brian Schwantner from Cedar Hill and James Haas from Viburnum are challenging the two regional rally events along with 100-Acre Wood first-timer, Mark Huebbe from St. Peters. The 100-Acre Wood Rally is known as one of the most scenic rallies on the Rally America calendar. It’s set in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and named after the storybook home of Winnie the Pooh. It is home to some of the best rally road in North America. Fans will have a chance to meet the drivers and see the cars close up at the Parc Exposes to be held at the City Park in Steelville on Friday, February 26^th and on 4^th and Main Streets in Salem on Saturday, February 27^th. Opening day of Missouri’s four trout parks always involves excited anglers and hungry rainbow trout. For more than 70 years, Missourians have been celebrating the arrival of spring by turning out in large numbers at trout parks on March 1^st. Weather plays an important role in determining crowd size on opening day. The trout park attendance record occurred in 1992, when 14,947 anglers descended on the parks for a Sunday opener with beautiful weather. The Missouri Department of Conservation operates trout hatcheries at all four trout parks and stocks three trout for every angler expected on opening day. Based on records in the past, the Conservation Department expects a total of 8,000 anglers will attend this year’s trout opener and they will stock about 24,000 trout at the four parks. Anglers who have not visited Montauk State Park since 2009 trout opener will find a new fish-cleaning station to make their post-fishing chores more convenient and keep the park cleaner as well as some of the fishing areas cleaned out after last year’s floods. Anglers will need a daily trout tag to fish in Missouri’s trout parks. Missouri residents 16 through 64 need a fishing permit in addition to the daily tag. "Whooo is out there?"  Owls have fascinated mankind for centuries, from the wise owl of the Greek goddess Athena to Winnie the Pooh’s friend. To learn more about these creatures of the night, join rangers from Ozark National Scenic Riverways on an Owl Prowl. We’ll learn fact and folklore about these little understood hunters of the night. Using recorded owl calls, rangers will try to get the owls to answer and maybe even approach close enough for a good look! The walk will be less than a mile, but dress warm because it’ll be chilly! The program will begin at 5:30 PM at the Alley Spring General Store Visitor Center on Friday, February 26. Alley Spring is located six miles west of Eminence, on State Route 106.  Meet at the General Store, uphill from the Mill.  Please dress warmly and an adult must accompany all children. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving mental commitment orders. On Sunday, February 14^th at 9:30 p.m. an officer transported a 30-year old female of Springfield to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Tuesday, February 16^th at 4:15 p.m. an officer transported a 46-year old male of Salem to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order.
