The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Deloris Gray Wood informed the commissioners that 140^th anniversary of the Dent County Courthouse will be March 30^th. She would like to organize a special tribute sponsored by the county and Dent County Historical Society with a state official to speak along with the commissioners, hold tours of the courthouse and more. The commission had no problem with the idea and told her to move forward with it. In the road report, Commissioners Dennis Purcell and Gary Larson said that a number of roads in Dent County are in bad shape as they are very wet. Purcell said that crews would be working on Dent County Roads 5420, 6083 and 6420 as well as the roads in the Montauk area in preparation of the opening of trout season. He said that they would be hand patching county road 5610, and checking the roads to be used in the road rally. Larson said that District 2 will be addressing the worse roads first, and they would haul and add gravel to the roads. If people have a major problem with the road where it becomes impassible or is in extremely bad shape, they can call the Road and Bridge Department number and leave a message at 729-7770. Purcell said that he would be attending the National Park Service Ozark Scenic Riverways Management Plan workshop today and Thursday in Rolla to see what is being proposed and discussed. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Committee meeting today. Skiles said that he has heard back from Judge Long about his request for an extension to pay the change of venue court costs until April 1^st so that the payroll records of the officers could be reviewed, and it was denied. H also received a letter from Ted Bruce, an assistant from the Attorney General’s office, about the costs of the trial and Dent County’s duty to pay. Skiles said that he received from Phelps County Clerk Sue Bennett records of 21 cases that had a change of venue to Phelps County and they ranged in costs from $321 to $15,476, with an average cost of $3,012 per trial. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the first day to file for office for the August 3^rd Primary was Tuesday, and that will also be the first day that people can vote absentee for the April Municipal Election. She said that March 10^th would be the last day to register to vote if you want to vote in the April election. At the last meeting, the Commissioners decided to bid out 300 plat books for the county that will be due by March 18^th at 10:00 AM. The commissioners also agreed to purchase a 2005 Chevy 4X4 from B&B Motors for the Road and Bridge Department for $10,000 from the bids received last week. They also agreed to purchase 250 fold-out county road maps from Mass Marketing, Inc for $125. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an intoxicated driver and theft. On Saturday, February 20^th at 12:15 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 500 block of Highway 19 South in reference to an intoxicated driver that led to the arrest of a 47-year old Salem man for driving while intoxicated and driving while license suspended. He was issued summons to appear in court and released to a family member. On Monday, February 22^nd at 11:30 a.m. an employee of the City of Salem Construction Department reported, that over the weekend, a person or persons unknown stole six-concrete forms from a construction site in the 1200 block of East Center Street. The forms were valued at $500. Anyone with information on the theft, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Quiz Bowl Teams finished second and third in their brackets on Saturday, February 20^th at the annual Bear Bowl held on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, which has an especially rigorous format requiring the teams to play 9 games during competition. Typical high school tournaments require 5 games. Salem Varsity got off to a great start beating Haas Hall. Salem lost to perennial state champion Richland in Game 2, but rallied to beat College Heights Christian Academy in Game 3. Salem then narrowly lost in the last question of Game 4 to Fordland and came back to Beat Kickapoo in Game 5. Going into the afternoon rounds with a 3-2 record meant Salem could not contend for a trophy, but could compete in the consolation rounds. In Game 6 Salem A played Salem B. Salem B won. Salem played Richland’s second team in Game 7 and took revenge for the morning loss by beating them. Salem then beat Kickapoo in Game 8, but Kickapoo narrowly defeated Salem in Game 9. The tournament did not have a Junior Varsity bracket and so the JV team with the help of senior Caety Brantly played as a Varsity team. Playing on the Varsity team were Bret Hagler, Patrick Witbrod, Josh Maggard and Kendra Case. Playing on the second team were Tarynn Huitt, Caety Brantley, Sarah Elliott and Rachelle Hayes. The Salem Quiz Bowl teams are coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles. Bret Hagler medalled as an All-Tournament Player for Salem.
