The Salem Quiz Bowl Teams took First Place in both the varsity and JV divisions in a clean sweep last Thursday evening at the annual SCA Quiz Bowl Tournament. Lane Howard, the varsity team captain, was the top scoring player in the tournament with a total of 670 points. Six Salem students were named to the All-Conference Teams. Named to the SCA First Team were Howard, 1^st place; Tarynn Huitt, 3^rd place and Liz Snyder, 8^th place. Named to the SCA Second Team were Daniel Schultz, 2^nd place; Tucker Conley, 5^th place and Jacob Gale, 8^th place. The Salem Varsity defeated Thayer, Ava and Houston to get to the championship round while the JV beat Thayer, Willow Springs and Houston. In the championship rounds, the Varsity again beat Ava to reach the finals, and then crushed Mountain Grove, 330-150 to win the event. The JV defeated Ava in the first round of the championship round before squeaking out a victory in the championship game over Willow Springs, 190-180. Playing on the Varsity Quiz Bowl team are Lane Howard, Tarynn Huitt, Liz Snyder, Ashley Greenshields and Kaycee Webber. Members of the Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl team include Daniel Schultz, Tucker Conley, Jacob Gale and Madison Auten. The teams are coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles. Their next competition will be Saturday in Jefferson City at the Helias Invitational Tournament.

Starting March 1^st, Missourians will be able to buy most hunting and fishing permits at home, using the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) new e-Permits system. The system will allow hunters, anglers, and trappers to print permits on regular computer printers and have them in hand them immediately. All sport-fishing and hunting permits will be available through e-Permits. So will trapping permits and the Apprentice Hunter Authorization. E-permits will look like the old permits and will be about the same size as in the past. Deer and turkey tagging procedures will change with the change to e-Permits. The main difference is that permits will no longer include a removable transportation tag. Instead, the permit itself will be the transportation tag. E-Permits will not be printed on adhesive-backed material, so hunters will need to provide a means of attaching them to harvested game. You also can save e-Permits on your computer and print extra copies of permits in case one is lost or ruined. As always, permits may not be shared and additional copies of a permit do not provide additional valid permits for the buyer or others to use. The Missouri Farm to Institution Project, a project of University of Missouri Extension and the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition, will host a Farm to School workshops on Wednesday, March 2^nd from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Registration deadline is Wednesday, February 23^rd. This event will be held at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. To register, call the Salem TCRC 573-729-8163. Missouri School Nutrition Association members can receive 7.5 hours of Continuing Education Credit (CECs) for attending. The Missouri Farm to Institution (FTI) Project seeks to improve the physical and economic health of all Missourians through the promotion of locally grown fruits and vegetables. By providing education, raising awareness, and increasing partnerships, the FTI Project is linking more schools, hospitals, and communities with locally-grown foods. This project is funded through a contract with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A report on the feasibility study for a potential National Heritage Area in the Missouri Ozarks is available to the public for their review and comments. The study encompasses an area that would include Carter, Dent, Douglas, Howell, Iron, Oregon, Ozark, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, Texas, Wayne and Wright counties. The report is available at the Salem Public Library and online at www.wparts.org or www.scogog.org. This project was spearheaded by Ozark Action, Inc., the Ozarks Preservation, Inc. and the West Plains Council on the Arts and was started in December of 2009. The project was federally funded by ARRA funds received by Ozark Action, Inc. from the US Department of Health and Human Services provided by the Missouri Department of Social Services, Family Support Division. The project premise is to find a way to market the cultural assets of the area that include the works of traditional artists and craftspeople, locally grown foods, and related resources of the Ozarks in a more integrated and effective way. National Heritage Areas are a program initiated by the National Park Service where they can provide technical, planning and limited financial assistance to the area. The NHA program’s website says, “the National Park Service is a partner and advisor, leaving the decision making authority in the hands of the local people and organizations.” The site also said that “Nothing in this management plan shall be construed to modify any provision of federal, state, or local law with regard to public access to or use of private lands.” Area residents are encouraged to read the report and to comment on it by writing to the West Plains Council on the Arts, P.O. The original cut off date to submit your comments was March 5^th, but they have extended the comment period to March 15^th for Dent County residents.
