The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday afternoon at the District Administrative offices. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Carvajal read a board recognition letter from State Representative Jason Smith. He also said that a steering committee meeting for the Proposition KIDS Bond Issue would be held tonight at 5:30 at the Junior High Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. Upper Elementary School Principal Melanie Wisdom said that 17 upper elementary and two junior high students have qualified for the NASP Archery Tournament in Warrensburg on March 23rd. That is the most students ever from Salem that has qualified. She also said that Mrs. Beasley has started a 5th and 6th grade choir, and that 6th grade students have formed their own drama club and have created their own DVD called “The Hunger Project.” Junior High Principal Bobbi Jo Lewis said that the 8th Grade Parents Night would be held Tuesday to prepare students for the 9th grade. She said that February 25th through March 1st would be ”Kids for Cancer Week” with numerous activities planned throughout the week. She went on to say that 30 students visited RTI on February 20th. Senior High Principal John Smith said that the GED test will be changing on January 2, 2014 and will be harder, be computer based and will cost $140. The current test costs only $40. He stated that five FFA students received their state degrees, and the band and choir are getting prepared for districts. He also proudly announced that the Salem Quiz Bowl Varsity and JV teams were SCA Conference Champs. The board approved the nomination of Becky Watts as the Jack Holley Music Scholarship nominee. The student is selected from a group of teachers and the selection is based on grades, attendance, activities and student involvement. The board approved the request from Project Graduation for two or three busses to transport students and their guests to Project Graduation in Rolla. The board approved the surplus property bids, the school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year that will begin on August 14th, and the changing of the March board meeting date to Monday, March 18th at 6:00. The board approved the resignation of head football coach Bill Schuchardt, and high school special ed teacher Diana Summers; and also accepted the retirement of special ed teacher Sharon Weilan, and upper elementary Title 1 reading instructor Rebecca Mitchell. The board then went into closed session.
With the first local major sleet and snowfall in two years, here is a reminder that the City of Salem has streets designated as emergency “snow routes” that have priority over other streets for the clearing of snow, ice or other debris. Those streets are Third Street west from Highway 19 to Dilworth Lane, and Third Street east from Pershing Avenue to Iron Mountain Road; Fourth Street from Pershing Avenue to McArthur Avenue; Sixth Street (Rolla Road) from McArthur Avenue to Pershing Avenue; Jackson Street north from Sixth Street (Rolla Road) to the dead end; Tenth Street from Highway 19 to Walnut Hill Drive; Pershing Avenue from Tenth Street to Highway 32/72; Center Street from Highway 19 to Craig Industrial Drive; Carty Street from Highway 32/72 to Center Street; Craig Industrial Drive from Highway 32/72 to Iron Mountain Road; Babb Lane from Highway 32/72 to Roosevelt Street; Doss Road south from Highway 32/72 to the city limits; Roosevelt Street east from Highway 19 to Babb Lane and west from Highway 19 to Wines Street; Wines Street from Roosevelt Street to Highway 32/72; Missouri Avenue from Highway 32/72 to Third Street; Park Street from Highway 32/72 to Sixth Street (Rolla Road); Franklin Street west from McArthur Avenue to Highway 72 and east from Highway 19 to Pershing Avenue; Dilworth Lane from Route J to Highway 32 West; and Center Street west from Missouri Avenue to Dilworth Lane. Remember to remove your vehicle from these routes when an accumulation of ice and snow is expected so that the route can be cleared. If you don’t move your vehicle, it could be towed at your expense, or you could be sited for a parking violation.
A couple of accidents occurred in Phelps County on Interstate 44 due to the weather yesterday. The first accident happened at 7:30 in the morning about twelve miles west of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 28-year old Tu Nguyen of Rolla was driving 2001 Nissan Pathfinder too fast for the conditions. The vehicle then went off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Nguyen suffered minor injuries but sought his own treatment. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The second accident occurred at 6:20 in the evening at the 169.5 mile-marker west of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 20-year old Sara Murphy of Rolla was driving a 2007 Saturn when the vehicle slid off the right side of the road and struck a deliniator post. Murphy suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by Phelps County ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team has been seeded 6th in District play and they will face 3rd seeded Hillcrest on Saturday at 3:30 in the afternoon at the Marshfield High School Gym. The cost of admission to all District games is $4.00 per person. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
The St. Louis Cardinals will start their Spring Training schedule this weekend. The Cards will play the Miami Marlins on Saturday at 11:55 and the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at 11:45. You’ll be able to hear the games on KSMO.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday night at 6:30. The Blues are 9-6-2 on the year. You’ll be able to hear the 1st periods of the game live on KSMO Radio wih the third period of the game on a taped delayed basis after Missouri Tiger basketball.
The Missouri Tiger basketball team will play at Kentucky Saturday night. Missouri is 19-7 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 7:30.
