An accident occurred at 7:15 Saturday evening in Dent County on Route E about 12 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1988 GMC pickup driven by 41-year old Daryl Sercl of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route E. Sercl traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and traveled off the left side of the roadway where he struck a tree. Sercl suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. A passenger in the GMC, 14-year old Karlie Johns, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Cardinal Glennon Hospital by EMS in St. Louis for treatment. No one was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The GMC sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital regular board meeting was held Thursday evening in the Hospital Library. For the month of January, the summary of operations showed revenues over expenses of $329,161 bringing the year-to-date revenues over expenses to $956,362. The hospital now has $3.6 million in CD’s. In the nurse’s report for January, there were 817 emergency room visits with a turnaround time of 117 minutes. There were 33 surgery cases, 189 home health visits, 7,680 lab tests, 1,069 radiological procedures, 243 CT scans, 25 MRI scans, 15 nuclear med scans, 330 rehab treatments, 222 dialysis treatments, 2,538 cardiopulmonary procedures and 375 clinical visits.  Administrator Dennis Pryor gave the hospital auxiliary report. The auxiliary is planning a Butter Braid, and a Scrubs and More fundraiser.  Pryor reported that 68 people participated in the February Health Screenings.  The hospital has received $5,000 from the Judson Young Memorial Foundation and these funds will be used in combination with the Auxiliary funds to continue purchasing flat screen televisions for each patient bed. The board viewed the final SMDH recruitment video that will be used to recruit doctors and nurses to transfer to Salem. The board approved a temporary cell phone policy for the hospital that included reimbursing the Home Health Nurses $25 per month for the use of personal cell phones while conducting their visits. A more thorough cell phone policy will be brought to a future board meeting for approval. The Board approved the budgeted purchase of a LCD monitor for the Laboratory for $137 from CDW-G, two digital signature devices for Registration for $427 from CDW-G and a EKG machine for Cardiopulmonary for $13,685 from Mortara Instruments. The board also approved the non-budgeted purchase of a CD/DVD printer for Radiology for $330 from CDW-G, a mixer whip and stainless 20 qt. bowl for Dietary for $474 from US Foodservice, a wireless barcode reader for the Pharmacy for $814 from CompUSA, two geriatric recliners for Long-Term Care for $1,068 from MMS, a tabletop pop-up trade show display for Administration for $1,320 from DisplayIt, and a call pilot voice mail upgrade for Administration for $6,557 from Embarq. The board then voted to go into executive session.

The public is invited to a naming ceremony for the Ken Fiebelman Ozark Heritage Memorial Highway this morning at 11:00. A portion of Highway 72 from Route FF in Dent County to the Phelps County line will be named for former Representative Fiebelman during the event that will be held at the City Hall Auditorium in Salem. Representative Fiebelman was first elected to the Missouri State House of Representatives in 1984 and served for 6 consecutive terms. He played an active role in getting Highway 72 from Rolla to Salem started, and introduced a bill to name the fiddle as the state musical instrument. Houlie Ibrahim was named the 2010 Basketball Homecoming Queen Friday night between the JV and varsity basketball games at the Salem High School Gym. Rounding out the Royal Court were seniors Kayla Meade and Danielle Connell, junior Ashley Jadwin and sophomore Mackenzie Wulff.
