An accident occurred at 4:33 Thursday evening in Pulaski County about two and a half miles east of St. Robert that took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet driven by 23-year old Michelle Church of Waynesville, lost traction on an ice covered bridge, slid across centerline and off the right side of the roadway. The Chevrolet then overturned and struck a tree. Church suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Fort Leonard Wood Hospital by Pulaski County ambulance. The Pulaski County Coroner Mike Hartness pronounced a passenger, 41-year old Sean Brown of Salem, dead at 5:15 PM, and the body was taken to Waynesville Memorial. Brown and Church were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Jacks Towing.
The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that all crew members had participated in the annual Mine Health and Safety Administration course held on Tuesday. Simpson and Tune also said that crews had been out cleaning debris from low water bridges and crossings from this past weekends rain and were preparing equipment and roads for snow and ice. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a number of meeting over the last couple of days. He said he attended a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting and a MRPC meeting last Thursday in St. James. On Monday he attended the Salem Area Community Betterment Association meeting, on Tuesday he attended an Ozark Riverways Solid Waste Management meeting, and on Wednesday he attended a Central Region Workforce Investment Caucus in Jefferson City. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that filing for the August 5th Primary Election will begin next Tuesday at 8:00 am in the clerk’s office and will end March 25th at 5:00 pm. If planning on filing for an office you will need to bring a proof of I.D., a $50 filing fee and the candidate tax affidavit form. Curley also wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the April 8th election is March 12th. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a very short meeting Thursday night with only five board members in attendance at the Upper Elementary Library Media Center. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Bryant gave the free and reduced lunch count and it stood at 752 and that is up from last year’s count of 736. He also reported that the January membership came in at 1,441 students and that is down from the September count of 1,507 students. Most of that difference is attributed to students taking an “early out” as seniors. In the long-range plan update, Bryant stated that he was unable to meet with the architects and engineers to discuss costs for the plan that would possibly create the need for a bond issue. He says that he has rescheduled a meeting on February 29th with them. He also said that the Dent County School Administrators meeting that was scheduled for this month was postponed due to bad weather and has been rescheduled for Monday. Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf talked about the professional development day held on Tuesday where the teachers heard Dr. Nancy Smith discuss differentiated instruction. The board then approved the program evaluation on differentiated programs that deal with special and migrant students. The board polices were discussed and Principal John Smith said that the new policy requires students to have completed 25 credit hours at the end of the 7th semester in order to take advantage of getting an “early out” that allows the student to walk with their classmates at graduation. According to Smith, most of the students have to take the last credit by correspondence course and they must pass the test in the required time in order to graduate with their classmates. He said some juniors are already taking the course in anticipation of this policy being approved by the board and it was. The board approved the policy change and also the closing of the purchase of the Monty Kitchen property at Dilworth and Route J. Closing costs will be $253 through Steelman Abstract and the total cost of the property is $82,753. The closing date has been set for March 3rd. The board accepted the resignation of Band Director David Sampson and junior high secretary Mary Ann Williams at the end of the school year, and also approved the immediate release of 6th grade teacher Jody Paul from her teaching contract for health reasons. The board approved allowing school attorneys Tom Mickes and Terry Goldman to remove the schools files from their current legal firm to their new firm that they just created. The board has set the March board meeting for the 13th at the Upper Elementary Library Media Center at 6:00. At that meeting, the dedication ceremony for the Upper Elementary will be held. The board then went into closed session.

The Salem Boys Basketball semi-final district game with Sullivan was postponed and has been rescheduled for tonight at Union at 7:30. If played, you will hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Alexander Frolov had a hat trick as the Los Angeles Kings pounded the St. Louis Blues, 5-1, at Staples Center. Dan Cloutier stopped 32-of-33 shots in the win. Manny Legace started in net for the Blues, who had won four of their last five games, and was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 19 shots. Chris Beckford-Tseu, making his first appearance in the NHL, finished the game between the pipes and stopped eight shots. Martin Rucinsky got the lone goal. The Blues will be in Anaheim tonight to face the Ducks at 9:00 and Sunday they will be at Phoenix at 7:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio.
