The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that patch grading was being done on Dent County Roads 6580, 6590, 6070, plus materials were being hauled to county roads 6580 and 6070. Purcell went on to say that he had a man hauling brown rock and that brush was being cut on county road 5550. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said brush was being cut on Dent County Road 4030. He also stated that crews were hauling and screening brown rock and patching muddy spots. Larson went on to say that a flat tire was being repaired on tractor #6 and truck #68 was being serviced. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that all three Commissioners attended the three-day training last week in Columbia. On Thursday, the commissioners went to Jefferson City to visit with State Representative Jeff Pogue and State Senator Dan Brown, as well as other legislators. During their visit, they learned that State Representative Randy Pike of Bates County, who is a former county commissioner, has introduced legislation to lower the statewide speed limit on county roads from the current 60 mph to 45 on all roads regardless of signage. Skiles noted that the Commission could set speed limits lower. Another piece of legislation receiving a lot of attention from commissioners throughout Missouri is HB #1726. If this bill passes in the State Legislature, it would raise sheriffs’ salaries 15% effective September 1, 2014, 10% January 1, 2015 and 5% January 1, 2016. HB #1726 contends that the raises will be paid out of fees charged by the sheriffs’ offices. The County Commissioners Board, which Skiles serves on, discussed the issue at great length and went on record as officially opposing HB #1726.  Presiding Commissioner Skiles went on record stating he feels the bill is irresponsible and asinine. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that the last day to register to vote in the April 8th municipal election is March 12 and that the first day to absentee vote in the municipal election is February 25th. She went on to say that the first day to file for the August primary election is February 25th. Curley went on to say that if voters have any questions about the municipal election they should call her office 729-4144. Curley stated that if anyone has questions for the primary regarding filing procedures, qualifications, guidelines, required documentation, etc., they are encouraged to call her office. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

At the Salem R-80 Board of Education meeting Wednesday night at the administration boardroom, Superintendent Steve Carvajal reported that Salem R-80 has received a $57,000 donation from the Cox Foundation for the library. Upper Elementary School Principal Melanie Wisdom reported that 94.8% of the students at the school have attended school 90% of the time through the month of January. She stated Don Grimes had donated an electric piano to the Salem R-80 music department and it is housed at the upper elementary school. Wisdom also reported on those students who qualified to attend the Missouri NASP Tournament at the Lake of the Ozarks in March. They include 10th grader Colton Fry, 9th grader Dalton Cook, 7th graders Megan Myslinski, Londyn Cook and Mackenzi Whitaker and 6th graders Kennison Parker and Nina Howard. Elementary individuals who also qualified were Drew Christensen, Irv Johnson, Wilman Midyett, Baylor Perry, Conner Pilkington, Kaitlyn Radford and Tyler Sweigard. Bobbi Jo Lewis from the Junior High stated that 7th graders Lorien Snyder, Blaine Fleener and Katelynn Walker along with 8th grader Jamie Bourbon have been chosen to have their art work on display at the state capitol at the Capitol Show on March 13th.  Lewis told the board the 7th and 8th grade classes had 142 students who have attended school at least 90% of the time with 16 students with perfect attendance, while 117 students in the 9th grade have attended school at least 90% of the time with 19 students having perfect attendance. Senior High Principal John Smith told the board Frank Schott took 1st place in the WYSE competition in English and he will advance to the state competition. Smith stated that Jennifer Holmes is the Salem High School nomination for the Missouri Scholars 100 Award. He reported that 91.5% of students in grades 10-12 have above 90% attendance. He also said that the JV and Varsity Volleyball teams have again received the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award from MSHSAA. In the Area 13 FFA Proficiency Award Contest, Smith reported that Dustin Camden took 1st place in the Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Placement. Smith went on to say that Amber McDaniel took 2nd in the Food Science and Technology Placement, Kaylin Inman took 2nd Place in the Outdoor Recreation Placement and Cody Bell took 2nd place in the Beef Production Placement.

The Salem Boys basketball team will be in Mountain View tonight to face the Liberty Eagles. Salem enters the game with an 11-12 record on the year and 4-2 in the SCA. The JV game will start at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team will play at Alabama on Saturday. Missouri is 19-7 on the year and 7-6 in the SEC. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.

Canada claimed its fourth straight gold medal in women's hockey, rallying for a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Americans.

Funeral services for Homer Earl Dillard, Jr. of Bridgeton, formerly of Salem, age 79, will be held Tuesday at noon at the New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Salem. Visitation will be held Monday from 6:00 to 9:00 at Collier’s Funeral Home in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Funeral services for William BJ Cunningham of Salem, age 55, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service.
