The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a disturbance, assault, theft, and a lost license plate. On Friday, February 11th at 10:19 at night, an officer was detailed to a room at the Walnut Motel in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 54-year old male of Salem and a 48-year old female of Salem for disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. They were issued summons to appear in court and were released. On Tuesday, February 15th at 9:53 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a shopping cart at Wal-Mart. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a wallet from a purse that was in a shopping cart at Wal-Mart. The value of the wallet is approximately $20. On Wednesday, February 16th at 12:19 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of East Bryan Street in reference to an assault with a knife. The investigation of the report revealed that a 23-year old male of Salem had cut the face of a 53-year old male of Salem with a machete. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was incarcerated for first-degree assault pending the application for a warrant. Later that afternoon at 4:40, an officer was dispatched to Classic Joyride in reference to a lost license plate. The investigation of the report revealed that during a test drive,  dealer plate D4784AM was lost. Please contact the Salem Police Department at (573) 729-4242 if you have any information regarding the theft or the lost stolen plate, which are still under investigation.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After the roll call and hearing of persons, bids will be reviewed for the 10 Alleycat bins for the recycling program. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his public works report, as well as report on the finance committee meeting and the utility committee meeting. The Aldermen will then give their reports. City Clerk Mary Happel will present Bill numbers 3213 through 3217 and Resolution number 2-2011. The bills are ordinances set to amend previous ordinances in the Code of the City of Salem. Resolution number 2-2011 is required so that the mayor can sign the lease/purchase agreement with the Bank of Salem for the 2011 Ford Explorer that was ordered several months ago from C&E Auto. The Mayor will then open the floor for discussions concerning the old high school property. The board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

Thursday morning at 11:50 in Crawford County, a 22-month old infant was playing on the bank of a creek with his siblings when he walked into the water and was swept away by the current. The body of Phillip V. Werner of Steelville was recovered downstream and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan where he was pronounced dead by drowning. A funeral mass will be held for the infant on Tuesday in St. James.

A report on the feasibility study for a potential National Heritage Area in the Missouri Ozarks is available to the public for their review and comments. The study encompasses an area that would include Carter, Dent, Douglas, Howell, Iron, Oregon, Ozark, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, Texas, Wayne and Wright counties. The report is available at the Salem Public Library and online at www.wparts.org or www.scogog.org. This project was spearheaded by Ozark Action, Inc., the Ozarks Preservation, Inc. and the West Plains Council on the Arts and was started in December of 2009. The project was federally funded by ARRA funds received by Ozark Action, Inc. from the US Department of Health and Human Services provided by the Missouri Department of Social Services, Family Support Division. The project premise is to find a way to market the cultural assets of the area that include the works of traditional artists and craftspeople, locally grown foods, and related resources of the Ozarks in a more integrated and effective way. National Heritage Areas are a program initiated by the National Park Service where they can provide technical, planning and limited financial assistance to the area. The NHA program’s website says, “the National Park Service is a partner and advisor, leaving the decision making authority in the hands of the local people and organizations.” The site also said that “Nothing in this management plan shall be construed to modify any provision of federal, state, or local law with regard to public access to or use of private lands.” Area residents are encouraged to read the report and to comment on it by writing to the West Plains Council on the Arts, P.O. Box 339, West Plains, MO. 65775, or emailing them at arts@townsqr.com. The original cut off date to submit your comments was March 5th, but they have extended the comment period to March 15th for Dent County residents.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers finished up their regular season with back-to-back home wins Friday and Saturday night over Mountain Grove and Cabool, respectively. Friday night, Salem was led in scoring by Chad Elliot with 19 points as Salem beat Mountain Grove, 55-47. Then Saturday afternoon, Salem had four players in double figures as they beat Cabool, 78-62. Jonathan Hambacker led the way with 18 points followed by Jacob Kettner with 16, Cody Whitaker with 14 and Chad Elliot with 13. Salem finished their regular season with an 8-15 record and 3-4 in the SCA. The Tigers will face Sullivan Tuesday night in District play at Union at 6:00. Admission to the game will be $4.00.

The Salem Lady Tigers finished the season with four straight wins as they beat Thayer Saturday afternoon, 47-39. Jennifer Herndon had 22 points for the Lady Tigers who came in third in the SCA with a 5-2 record. Their overall record ended up at 13-11 after starting the season with an 0-8 record. The Lady Tigers will face the St. Clair Lady Bulldogs today at 6:00 in District play in Union. Admission to the game is $4.00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Marcus Denmon had 25 points to help No. 20 Missouri snap a five-game road skid with a 76-70 win over Iowa State. Laurence Bowers had 16 points and seven rebounds while Ricardo Ratliffe added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (21-6, 7-5 Big 12), who have won three straight. Missouri hosts Baylor on Wednesday.

Friday night, Ty Conklin stopped 25 shots for his second shutout of the season and the Blues finally won back-to-back games with a 3-0 triumph over Buffalo. Then on Saturday, Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie and Chris Stewart each scored a pair of goals, as the new-look St. Louis Blues dominated the Anaheim Ducks, 9-3, at Scottrade Center. David Backes and Alexander Steen both had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who have won three in a row. Ty Conklin stopped 3-of-5 shots before being replaced by Ben Bishop, who made 20 saves. The Blues will host the Chicago Blackhawks at 1:00 today and you can hear the game on KSMO.

The St. Louis Blues have traded defenseman Erik Johnson and center Jay McClement to the Colorado Avalanche in a multi-player trade announced early Saturday morning. In addition to the two players, the Blues sent a conditional 2011 or 2012 first-round draft choice to Colorado in exchange for forward Chris Stewart and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, as well as a conditional 2011 or 2012 second-round draft choice. The deal comes shortly after the Blues shipped defenseman and team captain Eric Brewer to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a prospect and a third-round pick in the NHL draft.

Jim Edmonds has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after 17 seasons. The 40-year-old Edmonds had signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this month, but an Achilles tendon injury has forced the perennial Gold Glove outfielder to end his career. Edmonds finished as a career .284 hitter with 393 home runs, 1,199 RBI and a .376 OBP.

The St. Louis Rams released Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe on Friday. Atogwe was drafted by the Rams in the 3rd round in 2005 and has spent all six years of his career in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Richard Clair Wilson of Salem, age 92, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Funeral mass for Philip Werner of Steelville, age 1 year and 10 months, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 to 7:30 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery in Steelville.

Funeral services for Billy Charles Cook of Salem, age 80, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Pearl Ora Woods of Steelville, age 96, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville.
