The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers finished up their regular season with back-to-back home wins Friday and Saturday night over Mountain Grove and Cabool, respectively. Friday night, Salem was led in scoring by Chad Elliot with 19 points as Salem beat Mountain Grove, 55-47. Then Saturday afternoon, Salem had four players in double figures as they beat Cabool, 78-62. Jonathan Hambacker led the way with 18 points followed by Jacob Kettner with 16, Cody Whitaker with 14 and Chad Elliot with 13. Salem finished their regular season with an 8-15 record and 3-4 in the SCA. The Tigers will face Sullivan Tuesday night in District play at Union at 6:00. Admission to the game will be $4.00.
The Salem Lady Tigers finished the season with four straight wins as they beat Thayer Saturday afternoon, 47-39. Jennifer Herndon had 22 points for the Lady Tigers who came in third in the SCA with a 5-2 record. Their overall record ended up at 13-11 after starting the season with an 0-8 record. Marcus Denmon had 25 points to help No. 20 Missouri snap a five-game road skid with a 76-70 win over Iowa State. Laurence Bowers had 16 points and seven rebounds while Ricardo Ratliffe added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (21-6, 7-5 Big 12), who have won three straight. Missouri hosts Baylor on Wednesday.
Friday night, Ty Conklin stopped 25 shots for his second shutout of the season and the Blues finally won back-to-back games with a 3-0 triumph over Buffalo. Then on Saturday, Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie and Chris Stewart each scored a pair of goals, as the new-look St. Louis Blues dominated the Anaheim Ducks, 9-3, at Scottrade Center. David Backes and Alexander Steen both had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who have won three in a row. Ty Conklin stopped 3-of-5 shots before being replaced by Ben Bishop, who made 20 saves. The Blues will host the Chicago Blackhawks at 1:00 today and you can hear the game on KSMO.
The St. Louis Blues have traded defenseman Erik Johnson and center Jay McClement to the Colorado Avalanche in a multi-player trade announced early Saturday morning. In addition to the two players, the Blues sent a conditional 2011 or 2012 first-round draft choice to Colorado in exchange for forward Chris Stewart and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, as well as a conditional 2011 or 2012 second-round draft choice. The deal comes shortly after the Blues shipped defenseman and team captain Eric Brewer to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a prospect and a third-round pick in the NHL draft.
Jim Edmonds has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after 17 seasons. The 40-year-old Edmonds had signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this month, but an Achilles tendon injury has forced the perennial Gold Glove outfielder to end his career. Edmonds finished as a career .284 hitter with 393 home runs, 1,199 RBI and a .376 OBP.
The St. Louis Rams released Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe on Friday. Atogwe was drafted by the Rams in the 3rd round in 2005 and has spent all six years of his career in St. Louis.
