The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday night at the city hall council chambers. The aldermen approved purchasing seven new chairs for the Council Chambers at $100.99 per chair from Automated Business Systems. The board discussed the purchase of a new pool filter for the Alice Lou Craig swimming pool. This new filter system will use chlorine pellets instead of liquid and will be a fiberglass tank with a 12-year warranty. The board approved the lowest bid of $62,781.18 from Vaughan Pools & Spas of Rolla, with the City removing the old tank and doing all the electrical work. The funding will come from a budget adjustment from the Capital Improvements budget. The board tabled a request to purchase a new pick-up for the Electric Department and a request to install electronic security gates at the airport. Park and Recreation President Doug Barnes gave a report on their recent meeting. He reported there are currently 160 youth enrolled in the basketball program. Barnes reported that the Al Brown fields would need topsoil and grass due to city crews digging lines for a new lift station. The Park Board recommended that the aldermen also look into increasing the pool fees to cover the costs of the new filter and minimum wage increase, but the board took no action at this time. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about the sign restoration at the Salem Freedom Activity Center and Mayor Brown stated that a sign company would be in town this week to look at that sign as well as the automated sign at the Highway 19-32-72 junction. McDaniels requested that City Engineer Bill Huffman draw up plans for an additional large pavilion at the City Park due to the strong demand for the pavilions. Alderman Mike Whitley gave the Utility Committee report. The aldermen heard seven recommendations from the committee and approved three of them. The first was drafting an ordinance to increase sewer and water rates by 5%. The City is required by their DNR grant that was received for sewer improvements to have the department self-sufficient or the city will have to pay the grant money back. The board also approved drafting an ordinance that would change a current ordinance that requires a separate sewer and water hookup to a workshop on private property. The ordinance would eliminate the need for a separate hookup. The board approved a policy change that would enable new utility service to be started with a new tenant or owner without a signed work order from the current landlord or owner. The board approved Bill No. 3089 that authorized the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and the MRPC for technical assistance to facilitate town hall meetings for planning purposes. The board approved establishing the Spring Clean Up Weeks of April 9th and April 16th. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs reported on the recent Town Hall Meeting that was held. Local business owners were in attendance and expressed some concerns and established some priorities for future growth. The number one issue that was discussed was the need to enforce city zoning laws and the cleanup of junkyards in the county. Brown reported that the Road Rally would be held this weekend in Salem. After approving the bills, the board then went into closed session to discuss real estate and litigation.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers had five players in double figures, but needed every last point as they hung on to edge St. James, 82-74 Tuesday night in Owensville in district play. Salem had a 16-point lead in the 4^th quarter before committing 13 turnovers as St. James got as close as three points before Salem pulled away late using free throws. Salem netted 27 of 40 free throws in the game going 16 of 25 in the 4^th quarter. Salem was led in scoring by C. J. Smith with 19 points followed by Jordan Davis with 16 points. The other three players in double figure were Taylor Sirois with 13 points, Solomon McNeal with 11 and Brad Lewis finished with 10 points. St. James was led in scoring by Austin Walls with 31 points and J.J. Jackson with 21. Salem is now 16-9 on the year and they will face Owensville on Thursday night at 6:00 at Owensville.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be in Owensville tonight at 7:30 to face the Sullivan Lady Eagles in the district semi-final. Sullivan had a bye in the first round. Salem enters the game with a 20-5 record. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

Lee Stempniak posted a goal and an assist and also scored in the shootout as the St. Louis Blues edged the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-4. Bill Guerin, David Backes and Christian Backman each scored while Manny Legace made 27 saves and stopped both shots he faced in the shootout for the streaking Blues, who have won four straight. St. Louis went 3-for-8 on the power play in the game.Barret Jackman and Dennis Wideman each picked up two assists for St. Louis. The Blues will be off until Saturday night.

Stefhon Hannah tallied 16 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Missouri Tigers defeated the Oklahoma Sooners, 72-68, in Big 12 Conference play from Mizzou Arena. Leo Lyons came off the bench to add 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field for Missouri (17-9, 6-7 Big 12) as the squad won for the third straight time and the fourth in the last five outings. Keon Lawrence and Matt Lawrence contributed 11 points apiece as well. Missouri finished the night shooting 49.1 percent from the field. In a game that saw four ties and 16 lead changes, the Tigers dominated in the paint, outscoring the visitors 38-14. Missouri will face Nebraska Saturday at noon on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Donna McCauley of Steelville will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Shirley Mae Meschke of Rolla, age 79, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Family Life Center.

Memorial services for Judge Charles Leick of Davisville, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Valhalla Cemetery in St. Charles.

Private graveside services for Archie William Kehr of Steelville, age 89, will be held Friday. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Earney Cemetery in Steelville.

Graveside services for Ronald Edward Smith of Crescent City, CA, formerly of Salem, age 70 will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dry Fork Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Services for George “Bill” Scofield of Houston, age 84, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 12:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
