The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, the second round of the Rally America National Championship, will be returning to our area this weekend. The event will kick off on Friday, February 21^st with a parc expose at the Steelvile City Park from noon to 1:30. Racing will take place until drivers end up in Salem that night around 8:00. There will then be a parc expose Saturday morning from 8:30 until 10:00 on 4^th Street in downtown Salem. Racing will continue all day Saturday and the finish line celebration will take place between 7:35 and 8:35 that night. There will be spectator locations set up for fans to view the action safely. Spectator stages D, E, and F are located in Dent County. Spectator stage D is located on County Road 5600 and will be open from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Spectator stage E is located on County Road 5380 and will be open 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 6:10 to 7:10 p.m. Spectator stage F is located on County Road 4370 and will be open from 1:35 to 2:35 p.m. and from 5:35 to 6:35 p.m. For more information and to view a map of all locations, visit www.100aw.org. The Salem R-80 Board of Education met for their regular meeting Wednesday evening at the administration boardroom. Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the board on the construction work at the school. He said that all the steel has been delivered, plus electrical and plumbing work has continued in the buildings. He indicated the concrete block work has been done on the high school improvements and they hope to have one building enclosed in three weeks. They are some roofing issues that are being addressed and the project is still expected to be completed between the middle to the end of May. Carvajal stated that the natural gas conversion at the school has already paid for itself with the increase in propane costs this winter. He said the sports co-op program for football and track with all the rural schools was renewed that allows the 7^th and 8^th graders from R-1 through R-4 to participate in those sports. Carvajal said the Salem Baseball team would not play at Busch Stadium this year as none of the dates that were available worked for the team. He said that he sold the 300 tickets that keeps Salem in the mix for a game in 2015 and the money raised will go to help pay for the new sprinkler system at the baseball field. Carvajal told the board that Salem had been nominated for the Rural School District of the Year from the Missouri Association of Rural Educators with the banquet to be held this weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks. He also told the board that two other insurance consortiums are interested in providing Salem with an insurance quote for the upcoming year as Salem has lowered their usage from 117% to 97%. Carvajal also handed out the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Inclement Weather policy to the board that explains how missed days have to be made up. The policy says the most days a school district will need to make up is ten and that occurs once 13 or more days of school is missed. The board approved the school calendar for the 2014-2015 year that shows the first day of school being August 13^th with a tentative graduation date set for May 15^th. The board approved revising Board policy IKC that deals with the number of semesters a student must attend Salem High School in order to qualify to be a salutatorian or valedictorian. The current policy says that students must attend Salem for at least three years to qualify. High School Principal John Smith said that was the most restrictive of any school policy around and suggested changing the policy requiring a student to attend Salem their senior year. The board approved the change. The board accepted the resignations of Jake Reardon as the Varsity Girls Softball coach, Phillip McClintock as the 7^th and 8^th grade Girls Basketball Coach and Julia Doddema as the Assistant Volleyball Coach. The board then went into closed session.

The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports. On Tuesday, February 11^th at 1:06 in the afternoon, four firefighters responded to Highway to assist EMS with a lift assist. Personnel returned to the station at 1:34. On Saturday, February 15^th at 8:15 in the morning, four firefighters to County Road 5015 for a flue fire. Upon arrival, they reported heavy smoke coming from the chimney. The fire was extinguished and personnel returned to the station at 9:10. Later that afternoon at 12:53, five firefighters assisted with establishing a landing zone at the fire station. On Sunday, February 16^th at 11:24 in the morning, eight firefighters responded to a structure fire on West Franklin. Upon arrival, the structure was fully involved and Jadwin Fire was requested for mutual aid. After the fire was extinguished, the State Fire Marshall’s Office was called to investigate and the fire is still under investigation. Personnel returned to the station at 3:25. On Monday, February 17^th at 1:42 in the early morning, four firefighters responded to County Road 4220 to assist EMS. Personnel returned to the station at 2:48.
