The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the hospital library. In the summary of operations for the month of January, the hospital showed an excess of expenses over revenues from operations before taxes of $76,978, but with $229,383 in unrestricted taxes, the hospital showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $153,404. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that there were 723 emergency room visits, 16 surgery cases, 203 home health visits, 6,628 lab tests, 1000 radiological procedures, 296 CT scans, 17 MRI scans, 15 nuclear med scans, 421 rehab treatments, 161 dialysis treatments and 294 clinical visits. She said that the numbers were down due to the icy conditions during the month. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the hospital auxiliary would hold their masquerade jewelry sale next Thursday and Friday at the hospital library. He also said that there were 77 participants in the heart healthy screenings held Tuesday through Thursday at the hospital which is about half of the response they had last year. He said that Physicians Office Building 3 still needs landscaping work and year to date expenditures are $1,330,249. The finance committee met and Chairman Leon Kreisler stated that this year’s budget would be more conservative based on the market assessment and economic factors. The hospital board approved these budgeted purchases: a desk chair for Home Health from Automated Business Systems for $240, A pulse Oximeter for Home Health fro BCI Digit for $432, a desk chair for the laboratory from ABS for $306, a mobile lead apron for Radiology from Universal Medical for $379, two CR cassette and IP’s for Radiology from FUJIFILM Medical Systems for $1,020, two commercial PC’s for cardiopulmonary and Home Health from PC Connection for $897 and three refurbished IV pumps from Part Source for $3,450. The board then approved the non-budgeted purchase of and ice dispenser for Dietary for $3,790 from Scotsman and two desk chairs from ABS for the Emergency Room for $825. The board then approved these budgeted purchases for Rehabilitation from Sammons Preston for fiscal year 2010 and they included an Iontophoresis for $216, a portable massage chair for $463, a powder board table for $549 and an electrotherapy/ultrasound machine for $2,859. The board further approved another purchase for the 2010 fiscal year budget for the Emergency Room and that was a Glidescope Intubation System from Verathon Medical for $10,968. The board then went into closed session.

Thursday night at The Commons Youth Building, the Salem Area Community Better Association saluted individuals and organizations THAT provided exceptional service to this community through their volunteer efforts. Individuals receiving the prestigious “Gift of Time” Awards were Diane Boulware for Humanitarian efforts and Lane Howard in the Youth Category. The Organizations that the received the “Gift of Time” Awards were the Dent County 4-H Leaders for their contributions to the Youth, Show Me H.O.P.E. for their Humanitarian efforts, and the Progressive Ozark Bank and Financial Group for their Community Enhancement. Others recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts were Jay Anderson, Jamin Bray, Ed Carmack, Carol Davis, Phyllis Hocker, Shirley Perkins, Bill and Sheri Stack, Leila Thomas, Carl and Missy Williams, the Dent County Fire District Firefighters and the Common Grounds. Congratulations to all those saluted for their outstanding efforts!

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will finish up the regular season tonight as they travel to Ava to face the Bears in SCA play. Salem is 11-12 on the year and 4-2 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Keith Tkachuk's goal at 2:52 of overtime lifted the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators in the front end of a home-and-home set. Andy McDonald assisted on Tkachuk's goaland scored the tying goal in the second period for St. Louis, which has won three of four. Chris Mason made 28 saves in the win. The two teams play Saturday night at 7:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The NHL announced on Thursday that the 2009-10 season will open with four games split between two European cities. Two of those games will feature the Blues and the detroit Red Wings in Stockholm, Sweden. The games, which will have each team play once as the home team, will be held on October 2 and 3.

The Missouri Tigers will be at Colorado to face the buffaloes Saturday afternoon starting at 12:30. You can hear the pregame show and game on KSMO Radio starting at 12:00. Missouri is 22-4 on the year and 9-2 in the Big 12.

Kansas City Royals have claimed infielder Tug Hulett off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Kansas City Chiefs have named Maurice Carthon as their assistant head coach.

Funeral services for Kenneth William Melton Sr. of Edgar Springs, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Edgar Springs. Memorials are suggested to the Smith Cemetery or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Funeral services for Judith Irene Gordon of Bunker, age 59, will be held Saturday at 1;00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Julia Tarrance of Columbia, formerly of Salem, age 32, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ernie Cottrill of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veteran’s Home in St. James.

Graveside services for Arzetta McDonald of Salem, age 96, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

A Memorial Mass for Arthur (Art) Stephens, Jr. of Salem, age 62, will be held March 4^th at 6:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
