The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for the past week. On Thursday, February 12^th at 4:39 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District First Responders were paged out to the 300 block of West 4^th Street to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Upon arrival, a male patient that had been run over by a truck was going to be flown Air Evac from the Dent County Fire Department parking lot and a total of 8 firefighters responded. On Monday, February 16^th at 1:32 in the morning, a page came in for the 200 block of South Jackson regarding a structure fire. Upon arrival heavy smoke was coming from the structure. A total of seven firefighters brought the fire under control and by 1:50 am, the Missouri Fire Marshal was notified and enroute to the scene. The scene was cleared at 4:50 that morning as the Missouri Fire Marshall’s office declared the fire accidental. At 7:28 that evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to Highway W for a grass fire. A total of 12 firefighters responded and after investigation the fire was determined to be a controlled burn.

The Public Water Supply District #1 has lifted the boil order for the area south of the Salem City limits on Highway 19. 

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library starting at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the January 22^nd meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will update the Board on the auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and legislative issues. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then give the summary of operations and statistics for the month of January along with the nursing services and ancillary service report. In old business, the Board will hear a report on Physician’s Office Building 3; there will be a strategic planning update and a medical staff bylaw review. In new business there will be a finance committee report and the Board will address hospital purchases. The Board will then go into closed session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After a calendar hearing and approval of the agenda, which will include the attendance report, food service report and substitute list, the board will hear communications. Superintendent Steve Bryant will then give updates on the academic team achievements, legislation, bond issue committee and will discuss the free and reduced lunch count. Bryant will discuss the January membership, give a CEE update, address the official ballot sample and address the Dent County School Administrators meeting. In new business the Board will discuss the CIA-PD day summary, the geometry performance event, the federal economic stimulus bills as well as facility needs. The board will look at a budget comparison and address cost saving measures and a program evaluation of differentiated programs. The Board will then consider some board policy changes or updates, approve the 2009/2010-school calendar and go over any resignations. The Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

An accident happened at 10:40 Tuesday night in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 14 miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 48-year old Gary Erdmann of Salem was traveling northbound on highway 68. Erdmann lost control of the Cavalier, ran off the left side of the roadway, and struck a ditch. Erdmann suffered moderate injuries and refused treatment at the scene. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Cavalier sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing of St. James.

U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the 8^th District at Congressional Connection Stops. The Congressional Connection Program gets staff out of the office and into the communities where they can have these types of meetings on a drop-in basis. The meeting in our area will be held on Monday, February 23^rd at the Salem Chamber of Commerce located at 200 South Main from 3:30 to 4:30 pm

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be at Ava tonight to wrap up their regular season. The Lady Tigers are 11-13 on the year and 4-2 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will then play in districts at Owensville Monday night at 6:00 against the Owensville Dutchgirls. Salem is seeded 4^th in district play.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be at Ava tomorrow night to close out their regular season. They are seeded 6^th in district play that will be at Owensville. They will face Eldon in the first round Tuesday night at 7:30.

Rick Nash was one of three players to register a goal and an assist, as the Columbus Blue Jackets escaped with a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Nationwide Arena. Alexander Steen scored a goal and set up another one for the Blues, who have lost three of five. Brad Winchester and T.J. Oshie also lit the lamp, while Chris Mason was beaten four times on 20 shots in defeat. The Blues will be in Nashville tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Tigers will be at Colorado Saturday afternoon at 12:00 in Big 12 play.

Funeral services for Sandra Lee Young of Lenox, age 68, will be held Friday at 1:30 at the Crossville Baptist Church in Bunker. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Elmer Eugene McWhorter of Salem, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Morrison Cemetery.

Funeral services for Kenneth William Melton Sr. of Edgar Springs, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Edgar Springs. Memorials are suggested to the Smith Cemetery or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Funeral services for Julia Tarrance of Columbia, formerly of Salem, age 32, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will also be Saturday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass for Arthur (Art) Stephens, Jr. of Salem, age 62, will be held March 4^th at 6:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Ernie Cottrill of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veteran's Home in St. James.
