The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing and meeting in reference to adding a conditional use permit for counseling or professional services to the city code book tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. Then at 7:00, the City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting. During the hearing of persons, the Current River Cruisers Car Club is requesting that the streets around the courthouse be closed for their annual Car Show on Saturday, June 14^th and Fred Whitaker is requesting the closing of 4^th Street from the Bank of Salem to the Red Barn in order to hold a music show from 1:00 to 10:00 pm on Saturday, May 31^st. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, the City requested bids for the clean up of 817 East Gibbs, owned by Darin and Tina Cook. The City held a public hearing on February 4^th at 9:00 am allowing the owners a chance to speak as to what the intention is to said building. The findings and judgment of the hearing along with three bids will be presented. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on various items concerning the city and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report on issues concerning the City of Salem. In new and miscellaneous business, since former city administrator, Clayton Lucas has moved and was the building commissioner, Mayor Brown will then need to appoint a new Building Commissioner and Brown will be presenting the names for streets within the cemetery for the Board’s approval. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the January 21^st meeting will be the summary of operations and statistics reports for January, followed by the nursing and ancillary service reports. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board with an auxiliary report, the hospital activity calendar and legislative issues. In old business, the Board will hear updates on the 2011 strategic planning goals and the Community Health Needs Assessment. The Board will then address purchases made for the hospital in new business. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

“The Earth Moves Under Our Feet,” an event in recognition of Earthquake Awareness Month, will be held at Onondaga Cave State Park on Saturday, February 22^nd. Sponsored by the Missouri Geological Survey and Missouri State Parks, the event will take place in the park’s visitor center between 10:30 a.m. and noon. The program will feature a presentation on earthquake history, preparedness and effects by a geologist with the Missouri Geological Survey. The program will also include an introduction to State Emergency Management Agency programs related to earthquakes, and a video on earthquakes in the Midwest. The event will conclude with a question and answer session designed to increase participants’ knowledge about these geological events. Missouri elementary, middle and home-school students Kindergarten thru 8 have until March 14^th to participate in the 2014 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest. The annual trash-can contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative media. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the contest is part of the state’s “No MOre Trash!” (NMT) statewide litter campaign. This partnership between MDC and MoDOT, along with thousands of volunteers, is working to prevent and reduce litter in Missouri through education, prevention, and cleanup activities. Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: Kindergarten thru 2^nd, 3^rd thru 5^th and 6^th thru 8^th. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules and effective use of theme and logo. First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school. There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online and up to three photos to www.nomoretrash.org by March 14^th.
