Democratic Party leaders from southeast Missouri have picked state Representative Steve Hodges to run in a special election to replace resigned U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson in the 8th district. The conservative Democrat from East Prairie was selected Saturday during a meeting in Poplar Bluff receiving 39 votes. A funeral home director from DeSoto, Todd Mahn, received 27 votes, and the former mayor of Blodgett, Mo., Markel Fitchpatrick, earned only two votes. The 64-year old Hodges of East Prairie, is a former grocery store owner and high school sports referee who spent a dozen years on a local school board and first won election to the Missouri House in 2006. Only after other likely candidates bowed out this past week did he belatedly enter the race Wednesday night to run in a June 4 special election against Republican State Representative Jason Smith from Salem. Smith was nominated by his party to run last weekend. Even though he is a Democrat, Hodges said he'd try to continue the legacies of Jo Ann and Bill Emerson in support for labor and agriculture. He also stressed a need to balance the budget.
