Tuesday night at the Grace Community Church Gathering Place, the Salem Area Community Betterment Association saluted individuals and organizations that provided exceptional service to this community through their volunteer efforts. Individuals receiving the prestigious “Gift of Time” Awards were Dan Salyer and Jeff Sellers for Community Enhancement, Bonnie Gray for Education, Jay Anderson for Historic Preservation, Jann Craig for Humanitarian efforts and Houlie Ibrahim in the Youth Category. The Organization that the received the “Gift of Time” Awards was the Dent County Fire Protection District Firefighters for their Humanitarian efforts. Others recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts were Jim and Jan Almond, James Coffman, Verla Floyd, Pat Johnson, Gary and Shirley Larson, Julie Salyer, Mary Lou Smith, Louise Venn, Doug Walter, Pam Webber and Deloris Gray Wood. Other organizations recognized for their efforts were the Salvation Army Service Unit Board of Directors and the Salem Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Judy Apperson received a special recognition for serving as the Salem Area Community Betterment secretary for many years. Congratulations to all those saluted for their outstanding efforts!

The Salem High School will be holding a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) filing workshop on Sunday, February 21^st from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the high school library. Brunch will be served during the workshop. Please RSVP to the counselor’s office at 729-5990 if you plan to attend. Anyone who will be attending college in 2010/2011 should file the FAFSA by the April 1^st Missouri deadline in order to be eligible for federal grants.

An accident occurred at 3:00 early Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Highway 72 about eight miles east of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Nissan Xterra driven by 26-year old Michael Bolerjack of Salem was traveling westbound on highway 72. Bolerjack lost control of the Nissan on the ice-covered roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned. Bolerjack suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing of Rolla. 

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant will address student academic achievements, give legislative update, address the free and reduced lunch count along with the January membership, and there will be an official ballot sample and Bryant will also address the Judson Young Foundation donation. In new business, there will be a review of the August bond issue results; there will be a 2009/2010 budget update, and a report from the CIA-PLC leadership team on the Powerful Learning conference. A program evaluation will be heard on differentiated programs, the transportation and safety communications system upgrade license, BOE policy 2010A updates, the Darrell “Jack” Holley MUSIC scholarship and any resignations. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00. After approval of minutes from the January 21^st meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will give the summary of operations and statistics report for January and then update the Board on the Auxiliary report, the hospital activity calendar and legislative updates. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then update the Board on the nursing services and ancillary service reports. In old business the Board will address the SMDH video, there will be a strategic planning update, an annual bylaw review, discussion of the hospital lagoon and a report on the finance committee meeting. In new business the Board will address hospital purchases. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.
