The Dent County Sheriff’s Office conducted a knock and talk investigation at a residence in the 500 block of Highway 68 on Tuesday, February 11th. As a result of a consent search, 36-year old Jereme Roark of Salem was arrested and charged with possession and manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of morphine, and illegally turning on the power at a residence on Highway 68. Roark was on probation and parole in Phelps County for burglary and property damage. The electric was on at the residence, but the owner does not reside there because he is in federal prison. Deputies checked the meter and determined that someone had illegally hooked up the power from the meter to the house. Intercounty Electric Cooperative was contacted and they safely shut off the power. Roark was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on a $250,000 cash only bond.

An accident happened in Phelps County Sunday morning at 1:25 on Phelps County Road 5010 about three miles south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 33-year old Thomas Rector of Licking was driving a 2005 Dodge Stratus southbound when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right side of the roadway. The Stratus then struck a wooden post as well as several trees. Rector suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the University Medical Center in Columbia. A passenger, 39-year old Benjamin Christenson of Rolla, also suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. Another passenger, 20-year old Christian Thomas of Eldridge, Missouri, was ejected from the Stratus and suffered moderate injuries. The Phelps County Ambulance took him to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. A third passenger, 25-year old Amy Frederich of Licking, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James Ambulance. Only Christian Thomas was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Stratus was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Ron Dishman’s Towing of Rolla.

An accident happened Sunday afternoon at 12:57 in Reynolds County on County Road 856 in Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, 47-year old Richard Bland of Bunker was driving a Polaris Sportsman 400 HL northbound, going up an embankment when the Polaris flipped on top of him. Bland suffered serious injuries and was taken by the Reynolds County Ambulance to the Southeast Health Hospital in Ellington. Bland was later flown to a Springfield Hospital with his injuries. Bland was not wearing any safety devices at the time of the accident. The Polaris sustained minor damages and was left at the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Sunday, February 9th at 7:47 in the evening, 21-year old Michelle Munson of Salem was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. She was taken to the Dent County Jail and put on a 24-hour hold. On Friday, February 14th at 6:55 in the evening, 23-year old Kasey Joseph of Cadet, MO was arrested on a felony Jefferson County probation violation warrant and a Washington County probation violation warrant for theft. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on no bond. On Saturday, February 15th at 9:05 in the evening, 27-year old Elisha Povilat of Salem was arrested on Dent County warrant for failing to appear on a charge of failing to register a motor vehicle and failing to wear a seat belt. She was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond.

Kelsey Michno was crowned the 2014 Basketball Homecoming Queen Friday night between the JV and varsity Salem Tiger basketball games. Michno was crowned by last year’s football homecoming queen: Ashley Crocker Floyd. The Basketball Homecoming Court consisted of seniors Mikayla Mathes and Taylor Frizzell, junior Hannah Jadwin and sophomore Erin Tune.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has released the general roadwork that continues in our area this week starting on Tuesday. In Crawford County, roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 19 between I-44 South Outer Road and the end of state maintenance, Route FF between I-44 South Outer Road and the end of state maintenance, and on Route ZZ between the Cuba city limit and Route F. Roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 8 between Highway 19 and the Washington County line; Highway 8 between Highway 19 and Woolsey road; Highway 19 between Highway 8 and Route O; and Highway 19 at Becker Road. Also in Crawford County, culvert pipe maintenance will take place Route F between I-44 and Highway 19. In Dent County, roadside maintenance will take place on Route B between Highway 19 and Highway 72. Culvert pipe maintenance in various locations will take place on Route N between Highway 19 and the end of state maintenance on Tuesday only. Culvert pipe maintenance will take place on Highway 19 at Route B. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through all these work areas. Zayne Kyser scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds to help the Salem Tigers defeat the Willow Springs Bears Friday night by the score 61-57. Cody Whitaker netted 16 points as the Tigers improve to 4-1 in the SCA and 11-11 overall. They will host the Thayer Bobcats tomorrow night in a key SCA matchup starting with the JV contest at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. The Salem Lady Tigers will take on the Thayer Lady Bobcats in SCA play tonight starting with the JV contest with the varsity game to follow. It will be Senior Night tonight and those festivities will be held between the JV and varsity contest. Behind a 24-point performance from Jabari Brown, the Missouri Tigers managed to hold off the Tennessee Volunteers, 75-70, in SEC action at Mizzou Arena. Brown shot 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 at the foul line for Missouri (18-7, 6-6 SEC), winners of back-to-back games. Earnest Ross scored 15 points and added four steals, while Johnathan Williams put up 10 points. Missouri will host the Vanderbilt Commodores on Wednesday.

TJ Oshie’s shootout winner propelled the US Hockey Team past Russia Saturday morning, 3-2. Oshie scored on 4 of 6 shootout attempts. On Sunday, the US Team defeated Slovania, 5-1. The US Hockey team is now the second seed in the Men’s Hockey Olympics Quarterfinal and will play again on Wednesday.

Funeral services for LeRoy Tipton of Vichy, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Highgate Baptist Cemetery in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Vichy Fire Department or the Broadway Baptist Church.
