IMPORTANT TRAFFIC NEWS!

The Dent County Commissioners have reported that due to unsafe road conditions on Dent County Road 3210 (better know as the Hospital Road,) the road is going to be closed to through traffic until further notice. Local traffic only will be allowed on the road. The Commission apologizes for any incovenience this may cause, but feels the safety of the citizens must take priority until the road can be repaired.

Thursday night at the Grace Community Church Gathering Place, the Salem Area Community Betterment Association saluted individuals and organizations that provided exceptional service to this community through their volunteer efforts. Four individuals and two groups received the prestigious “Gift of Time” Awards.  The Community Enhancement “Gift of Time” Award was presented to Stan Podorski for his commitment to renovating the school press boxes and televising local youth programs. Alan Benowitz was given the “Gift of Time“ Award in the Youth category for his work with the Road Rally and local toy drive. In the Humanitarian category, Bob Gravley was honored with a “Gift of Time” Award for his kindness and willingness to help anyone in need, and the Historical Preservation “Gift of Time” Award was presented to Dennis Hayman for his dedication of time and talent to the Trail of Tears markers. The organizations that received the “Gift of Time” Awards were the Salem TCRC Partners in the Education category for their commitment to the Salem TCRC and working to allow the facility to remain open; and the 4-H Youth Shooting Sports leaders were honored in the Adult for Youth category for their commitment to provide this program to the young people in the area. Others recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts were Larry Gray, and Deloris Gray Wood. Other organizations recognized for their efforts were the Council for a Healthy Dent County and the Council’s Babysitters Academy Faculty. Liz Gruendel received a special recognition for serving as the Community Betterment Awards Banquet Committee Chairman for 13 years. Congratulations to all those saluted for their outstanding efforts!

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. Claude Bridges came in to see Commissioner Gary Larson to discuss creating an access way to Dent County Road 2390 from the parking area of a property where a new church is going to be built. Larson said that the supervisor would need to look at the area to determine the size of the culvert that would need to be installed. Larson said that the county would install the culvert, but the church would have to buy the culvert. Bridges said that the church may also want an access to Highway 32 as well from their parking lot. He was given the name and number of the person they would need to speak to at MoDOT. In the road report, both districts attended the Mine Safety Health Administration training on Wednesday and were being given their annual first aid training by the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that he attended the Meramec Regional Development Corporation meeting on Wednesday and heard about the Small Business and Technology Development Centers at the Missouri S & T Campus. S&T acts as a service center for the program under a contract with the University of Missouri Extension. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a SACBA meeting Tuesday where they finalized their plans for their annual awards dinner and discussed a Trivia Night to be held on March 24th. Skiles said the courthouse will be closed on Monday for President’s Day. He said that he would be going to Jefferson City Wednesday to meet with legislators with other county commissioners from the South Central Region, and will then go to Columbia that same day to attend a meeting of the Central Region Work Force Investment Council. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported the last day to register to vote for the April election will be March 7th and the first day to vote absentee for the April election will be February 21st. She also said that if anyone has changed their name or have moved within the county to please call her office to update your voting registration. The number is 729-4144. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday, February 23rd at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Tiger Basketball team lost to Mountain Grove on Thursday night, 61-34. Kaytlyn Wells led Salem with 16 points as the Lady Tigers fall to 6-19 on the year and finish 1-6 in the SCA.

The Salem Tiger Boy’s Basketball team will be in Mountain Grove tonight to face the Panthers in their regular season finale. The JV will start things out at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at around 7:20. Salem is 11-13 on the year and 3-3 in the SCA and you’ll be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com.

Basketball district play begins next week in Class 4, District 9 in Union for the Salem boys and girls basketball teams. The Salem Lady Tigers were seeded 6th and they will face the Union Lady Wildcats on Monday night starting at 7:30. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers were seeded 3rd and they will play Owensville in the first round on Tuesday at 7:30 at Union. The cost for each game at districts is $4.00.

T.J. Oshie had a goal and two assists and Brian Elliott made 26 saves, as the Blues downed the Islanders, 5-1, on Thursday. Jason Arnott, Kevin Shattenkirk, Andy McDonald, and David Perron all scored for the Blues, who were coming off of Tuesday's 2-1 loss at Columbus. They scored five unanswered goals to win for the sixth time in eight games. The Blues will play the Minnesota Wild on Saturday at 1:00 and KSMO will broadcast the 3rd period following the Missouri game.

The 3rd ranked Missouri Tiger basketball squad will be on the road Saturday to face Texas A&M. Missouri is 24-2 on the year and are tied for the lead in the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show, at 12:30.

Funeral services for Alta Louise Fink of Rolla, age 75, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Elk Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Funeral services for Lloyd F. Byrd of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until time of service at the Chapel with a Masonic Lodge Service at 11:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Salem Memorial District Hospital Relay for Life team.

Funeral services for Opal V. Pruett of Rolla, age 91, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.

Graveside services for Stephanie Maylee of Rolla, age 25, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Mount Zion Cemetery near Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until 12:45 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the family of Stephanie Maylee.

Funeral services for Marie Gray of Salem, age 96, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Satuday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Upper Parker Church.

Funeral services for Ray Skeeters of Salem, age 81, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
