The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Tuesday evening, due to Monday being a holiday. Alderman Jim McDaniels was not in attendance, he was driving a bus for the basketball game that was rescheduled from Monday. During the approval of the agenda, it was reported that the sales tax revenue for January was $73,924.38, which is down $23,175 collections last January. In bids, the City had previously requested bids for the collection of past due utility accounts. Mayor Gary Brown reported that three bids were received, and requested the item be postponed until phone calls could be made for clarification on the bids and the Board approved the request. The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission held a meeting prior to the Alderman meeting regarding the vacating of a portion of West Gibbs Street. Bill Huffman reported that a motion was made to postpone any further action until all the landowners on the street could sign an agreement for the street to be closed. Mayor Gary Brown reported that he and City Clerk Mary Happel would be attending the MML Legislative Conference on Wednesday, February 17^th beginning at noon in Jefferson City. Brown said that he would be meeting with Senator Frank Barnitz and Representative Jason Smith while in Jeff City Wednesday afternoon and he would be staying for the MML Natural Resources Committee meeting on Thursday. He reported that work continues around Salem on various projects, the concrete work has been halted due to the cold conditions, maintenance continues on city trucks, and the part came in for the computer at the airport for fuel reporting. He said he attended the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting at the MRPC and that four of the 13 projects in the District 9 area will be in the Dent County area concentrating on the creating of shoulders for roads. The first priority was Highway 19 from Steelville to Salem, the fifth priority from Highway 32 to the turn off to Bunker, the seventh priority was on Highway 19 from Salem to Eminence, and the eighth priority was on Highway 72 from Highway 32 to Highway 21. Mayor Brown will meet with the Missouri Public Alliance Group Friday from 10:00 until noon and will also meet with two other groups Friday afternoon regarding electric for the City of Salem. Brown reported that Saturday, February 20^th is recycling day in Salem and paper can be recycled at the Shelter Workshop. On Monday, February 22^nd, MoDOT will be hosting a Memorial Highway Ceremony honoring Kenny Fiebelman; and on Tuesday, February 23^rd, Brown will be meeting with the Delta Regional Authority at the MPRC in St. James for a funding meeting. Alderman Jim Jackson asked about the recycling and Brown reported that the City does have a recycling trailer and 10 bins for the recycling. Jackson also asked about the bill for the state audit and it was reported that the bill has not yet been received. Alderman Kenneth Nash reported that he has received several calls on the potholes around town, and the weather has not been favorable for road repairs. Nash also asked if there was a way he could get a report from the construction crew on the work that they perform, and he asked about the dirt dam on Gibbs Street. Brown said he would check on the report and that discussion about Gibbs Street was in the works already to do concrete work and curbing. Alderman Brad Nash asked about the water problem on Roosevelt, and Brown said that the water problem on Hunt Street would be taken care of first and then Roosevelt Street would be addressed. Brad Nash also reported he had gotten a call about the safety of the men’s shower at the Freedom Activity Center. Brown reported that there had been a discussion of fixing the shower due to the fact that it leaks and there are cracks in the blocks. During the introduction and reading of bills, Kenneth Nash said that he had talked with Alderman Jim McDaniels and McDaniels had asked that the vote on Bill #3191, which is an ordinance needed according to state statues when you adjust the budget figures, be postponed until all were in attendance, and the request was approved. After approval of bills, the Board voted to go into closed session.
