The Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops conducted on Friday, February 13th. At 12:20 Friday morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem man, a passenger in the vehicle, for possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Then at 11:52 that night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 46-year old Salem man for the traffic violation and driving while intoxicated. He was issued summons to appear in court and released.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm tonight. During hearing of persons, Karen Skornia from Regional Credit Services will give a presentation on the services her company provides. In unfinished business, at the last meeting Alderman Riley suggested the City go out for bids to collection agencies to collect the un-collectible utility accounts. The Board will need to direct the City Clerk how they want her to advertise for bids. In reports of city officials, boards and committees Mayor Gary Brown wishes to discuss pay for emergency storm work, the basketball program, and a notice to building owners and contractors regarding new building construction and additions be required a City building permit and that the business and or contractor have a license from the City of Salem. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Jackson, and Kenneth Nash will then discuss miscellaneous items involving the city, along with Jim McDaniels as he would also like a storm water update, as well as discuss the street sweeper, emergency keys, and replacement of asphalt. Bills to be read and discussed include Bill #3153, an ordinance between the City of Salem and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department for inmate board fees for city prisoners incarcerated in the county jail; Bill #3153, an ordinance between the City of Salem and the Dent County University of Missouri Extension Council for services provided to the city; Bill #3154, an ordinance allowing the “Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday” to apply to the local sales tax between April 19th and April 25th; and Bill #3155, an ordinance between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for the purchase of real estate located on Highway 19 North also know as the Highway 19 roadside park to the city, will be presented. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then go into closed session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public. 

The Dent County University of Missouri Extension Council will hold it’s annual banquet this Friday at the “Commons” Youth Building beginning at 6:30 pm. The guest speaker for this year’s banquet will be Sergeant Dan Crain from the Missouri Highway Patrol Troop I headquarters in Rolla. Crain will give an informational presentation on consumer fraud and identity theft. As part of the banquet, those members leaving the Council as well as those newly elected will be honored. The cost of the meal will be $10 per person, with children under 10-years of age eating FREE. Those planning to attend need to make their reservations by tomorrow by calling the Extension at 729-3196.

An accident happened Monday morning at 7:30 in Crawford County on Route CC about 11 miles north of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Sterling Cement Truck driven by 29-year old Chesley Daniels of St. James was traveling west on Route CC. The cement truck failed to negotiate a curve and skidded across the centerline, overturned and continued sliding off the left side of the roadway. The cement truck then struck several trees and a fence. Daniels was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Arch Helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The cement truck was totaled and removed from the scene by Chuck’s Towing of Sullivan.

Jennifer Herndon scored 18 points  and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers past the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers last night in the final home game of the year, 38-30. It was Senior Night and Hannah Kettner and Jessica Brand were honored along with their parents between the JV and varsity game. Salem improves to 11-13 with win coming off the heels of a second place finish in the Newburg Tournament. Salem is 4-2 in the SCA. They will wrap up their regular season Thursday night at Ava.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host Mountain Grove tonight in their final home game of the year and it will be Senior Night. Salem enters the game with a 10-12 record on the year and 3-2 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

B.J. Crombeen netted the deciding goal late in regulation as St. Louis edged the New York Rangers, 2-1, at Scottrade Center. Carlo Colaiacovo provided the other score for the Blues, who successfully followed up a 1-0 win over Chicago on Friday. Chris Mason stopped 19 shots for his 10th win of the season and second in as many starts. The Blues will be at Columbus Wednesday night at 6:00.

The St. Louis Cardinals and outfielder Ryan Ludwick agreed to terms on a one-year contract for the 2009 season on Monday, avoiding arbitration. The 30-year-old Ludwick had the best season of his six-year career in 2008, earning his first All-Star nod during a campaign that established career-highs in batting average (.299), home runs (37), runs batted in (113) and games played (152). Ludwick was the fifth and final arbitration eligible player for the Cardinals, who have not had a salary arbitration hearing since 1999.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols confirmed Monday he will not be taking part in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Pujols, who underwent surgery on his right elbow in October, was seeking to secure insurance from event underwriters to cover his participation, something that the slugger told MLB.com on Monday was not in the cards. Pujols garnered his second National League Most Valuable Player award in 2008 following a season in which he batted .357 with 37 home runs, 116 runs batted in, a .462 on-base percentage, and 104 walks to just 54 strikeouts.

Funeral services for Katherine Wade of St. James, age 67, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church or St. James Caring Center.

Funeral services for Ron McGuirk of Salem, age 51, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family

Funeral services for Sandra Lee Young of Lenox, age 68, will be held Friday at 1:30 at the Crossville Baptist Church in Bunker. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Elmer Eugene McWhorter of Salem, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Morrison Cemetery.

Funeral services for Julia Tarrance of Columbia, formerly of Salem, age 32, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will also be Saturday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass for Arthur (Art) Stephens, Jr. of Salem, age 62, will be held March 4th at 6:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
