The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Monday, February 6^th at 12:13 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of West Beasley in reference to a fight in progress. The investigation revealed that a 17-year old female and a 22-year old female, both of Salem, had been fighting. They were both arrested, were issued summons to appear in court for disorderly conduct, and released. Later that afternoon at 2:10 pm, an officer was detailed to the S.E.M.O. Behavioral Health located at 301 North Grand in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 37-year old Seymour female had assaulted a 29-year old Webb City female. The suspect was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. That evening at 7:12 pm, an officer made contact with a 28-year old Salem male at a residence in the 800 block of West Third who had an active warrant from Texas County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated at Dent County Jail. On Tuesday, February 7^th at 2:45 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a battery valued $100 from a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon parked at a residence in the 1000 block of West Coffman. Anyone with any information regarding the theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 573-729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will be conducting a Special Meeting on Saturday, February 18^th at district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 1:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will vote to then adjourn and move into Closed Session. During Executive Session, the Board will be discussing personnel.

“The Earth Moves Under Our Feet,” an event in recognition of Earthquake Awareness Month, will be held Saturday, February 18^th at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg. The free event, scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Geology and Land Survey and Missouri State Parks. The park’s visitor center will feature displays relating to earthquakes for visitors to explore. At 10:30 a.m., Edie Starbuck, a department geologist, will present a program on earthquake basics, history, earthquake preparedness and the effects earthquakes have had, and will have, on the land and human population. This program will include an introduction to the State Emergency Management Agency programs related to earthquakes. After the program, a video about earthquakes in the Midwest will be shown. There will be time for questions and answers. Onondaga Cave State Park is located seven miles southeast of the Leasburg exit off of Interstate 44 on Highway H. More than 1.7 million visitors from Missouri and beyond flock to the Show-Me State’s four trout parks each year. Along the way, they also leave more than $100 million, which supports thousands of jobs and sustains local economies. Three of Missouri’s trout parks–Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Montauk State Park near Licking and Roaring River State Park near Cassville–are owned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Maramec Spring Park near St. James belongs to the James Foundation. These destinations, with campgrounds, hiking trails, historic buildings and other amenities, are wonderful destinations in their own rights. But trout provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) are the main attraction. March 1^st marks the start of the catch-and-keep fishing season at trout parks, and thousands have been making the pilgrimage to Missouri’s trout temples on that date for more than 70 years. Maramec Springs is expecting around 1,000 anglers on opening day, while Montauk is expecting 2,000. Retired science teacher Berry Reynolds, of Licking, will fire the opening gun at Montauk to launch the 2012 catch-and-keep season. He has fished every opening day at Montauk since 1973. In an attempt to keep didymo, an invasive algae also known as rock snot, out of Missouri, the Conservation Commission has banned the use of felt or other porous-soled waders, which can harbor didymo cells. Didymo reduces natural food sources and fouls hooks, making fishing nearly impossible. Residents in Crawford, Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski, and Laclede counties interested in volunteering during emergency situations are encouraged to take advantage of a three-day course offered March 2^nd –4^th in St. James. The 21-hour training is offered free of charge. The classes are from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 2^nd, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3^rd, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4^th at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission Office, 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The training will introduce participants to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept of preparing civilians to proactively organize and train for a disaster. CERT trainings cover disaster fire suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization. Certified CERT instructors Byron Burke and Terry Bruno will teach the course. Lunch will be provided for participants on Saturday and Sunday.
