Tuesday night at the Grace Community Church Gathering Place, the Salem Area Community Betterment Association saluted individuals and organizations that provided exceptional service to this community through their volunteer efforts. Individuals receiving the prestigious “Gift of Time” Awards were Jim Heavin for Arts and Culture, Vicki Loveday for Community Enhancement, Ken Fiebelman for Historic Preservation and Scott Radford for Humanitarianism. The organizations that received the “Gift of Time” Awards were the Current River Scrappers Quilt Guild for their Humanitarian efforts as well as the National Honor Society, the Dollar General Employees and the Salem Memorial District Hospital Employees for their Youth efforts. Others recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts were Bryon Craig, Joan Gray, Larry Gray, Mike Helm, Rusty and Dolly Howard, Pat Johnson, Glinn Lovins, David Nichols, Bob Parsons, Berniece Robinson, Jackie Sisco and Val Davidson, Mary Lou Smith, and Charlotte White. Other organizations recognized for their efforts were the Dent County Historical Society, Lifeway Center, and the Salem Masonic Lodge #225. Jay Anderson received a special recognition for serving on the Sesquicentennial Committee and coordinating the downtown Walking Tours. Congratulations to all those saluted for their outstanding efforts!
The Dent County Sheriff's Office received a call at 7:00 am on Thursday, February 10th regarding two trailers that were parked at a construction site on Highway FF off of Highway 68. According to reports, a white 16-foot enclosed cargo trailer loaded with $30 to $40 thousand dollars worth of carpenter's tools, air tools, battery powered tools, and other construction equipment, was taken from the scene. Another $30,000 worth of building materials and items were taken from a second trailer at the building site and removed from the scene. The cargo trailer was recovered off Highway E, and all contents were gone. Also taken was about $10,000 worth of wiring, a hot water heater, electrical and plumbing items, exterior doors and more. The incident was reported to have occurred between 5:00 pm on Wednesday, February 9th and 6:30 am Thursday, February 10th. The trailers and items taken belonged to the Fulton Construction Company of Salem and they have issued a $7,500 reward for information leading to the arrest, conviction and prosecution of individuals responsible as well as the return of the stolen property. A report on the feasibility study for a potential National Heritage Area in the Missouri Ozarks is available to the public for their review and comments. The study encompasses an area that would include Carter, Dent, Douglas, Howell, Iron, Oregon, Ozark, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, Texas, Wayne and Wright counties. The report is available at the Salem Public Library and online at www.wparts.org or www.scogog.org. This project was spearheaded by Ozark Action, Inc., the Ozarks Preservation, Inc. and the West Plains Council on the Arts and was started in December of 2009. The project was federally funded by ARRA funds received by Ozark Action, Inc. from the US Department of Health and Human Services provided by the Missouri Department of Social Services, Family Support Division. The project premise is to find a way to market the cultural assets of the area that include the works of traditional artists and craftspeople, locally grown foods, and related resources of the Ozarks in a more integrated and effective way. National Heritage Areas are a program initiated by the National Park Service where they can provide technical, planning and limited financial assistance to the area. The NHA program’s website says, “the National Park Service is a partner and advisor, leaving the decision making authority in the hands of the local people and organizations.” The site also said that “Nothing in this management plan shall be construed to modify any provision of federal, state, or local law with regard to public access to or use of private lands.” Area residents are encouraged to read the report and to comment on it by writing to the West Plains Council on the Arts, P.O. Box 339, West Plains, MO. 65775, or emailing them at arts@townsqr.com. The original cut off date to submit your comments was March 5th, but they have extended the comment period to March 15th for Dent County residents.

Derek Daniels finished with 25 points to lead the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles past the Salem Tigers, 68-61. Salem received 17 points from Dustin Sercl, while Jonathan Hambacker netted 13 points and Chad Elliot scored a dozen. Salem is now 6-16 on the year and 1-4 in the SCA. They will host Mountain Grove Friday night.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers are seeded 5th in District play and they will face Sullivan on Tuesday, February 22nd at 6:00 at the Union High School Gym. If Salem wins that game, they would face the #1 seeded St. Francis Borgia Knights on Thursday at 6:00 at Union.
Marcus Denmon led the way with 20 points and Kim English chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds, as No. 20 Missouri held on for a 92-84 win over Texas Tech in Big 12 action. Michael Dixon finished with 13 points before fouling out for Missouri (20-6, 6-5 Big 12), which has won two straight and three of its last four, and improved to a perfect 16-0 at home this season. Laurence Bowers added 10 points for the victors. Missouri shot 58.1 percent from the floor and hit 8-of-17 from three-point territory in the game. Missouri will face Iowa State Saturday at noon.
