The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter because of the risk of salmonella contamination. The affected jars are made by ConAgra in a single facility in Sylvester, Ga. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected. ConAgra said it is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111. The largest number of salmonella cases have been reported in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri. It has been reported that a number of these jars have been purchased in the Dent County area. Please check your Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter jars for the product code number starting with 2111. Symptoms of salmonella can include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting. ConAgra advised consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111, but keep the lid so that you can get a full refund. You will need to send your name and address along with the lid to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 57078, Irvine, CA 92619.

The Salem FFA Chapter is celebrating their 60th anniversary with a special gathering to be held at the high school gymnasium from 2:00 to 5:00 THIS Sunday. Refreshments will be served and there will be exhibits, displays, old movies, power point presentations, plus an official program from 3:00 to about 4:00. The Salem FFA Chapter started in the fall of 1946 under the direction of B. Oscar Brown and continues today under the guidance of Bob Parsons. The official program will begin with a welcome from Superintendent Steve Bryant and Chapter President Tiffany Land, then the current FFA officers will carry out the opening ceremonies that include the recognition of any former officers that happened to be in attendance. Then the program will track FFA through the decades starting in the 40’s. The FFA chapter will also recognize three-generation families that have had members in the Salem FFA Chapter. The special ceremonies will recognize former AG teachers at Salem, recognize the first class of females from the 1970’s and much more. Anyone who participated in the FFA program, had sons or daughters or grandsons or granddaughters who participated, or just want to help celebrate 60 years of service to the children are welcome to attend.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that District 1 and District 2 crews are attending the Annual Safety and First Aid training. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed Monday, February 19th in observance of President’s Day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting for the April 3rd Election would begin February 20th. Representatives from Dent County Health and Safety Departments attended the meeting to discuss their concerns with Dent Counties Emergency Operations Plan in case of a disaster. Their concerns are that the county is not up to date with emergency response possibilities and they would like to see steps be made and meetings be held to get Dent County where it needs to be in case of a disaster. The Commission agreed and Commissioner Skiles said he would be getting in contact with Fire Chief Brad Nash to set a time and place for a meeting to be held to discuss what needs to be done to get Dent County up to emergency response standards. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Senator Frank Barnitz announces that district legislative assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna will continue her listening posts in February at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. Listening Posts in our area will be held on Tuesday, February 20th from 9:00 until 11:00 am at the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla. Rowden will then travel to St. James for a Listening Post and from 12:00 (noon) until 2:00 pm at the St. James City Hall Tuesday afternoon.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers outscored Houston in the first half, 30-12, then held them scoreless in the third quarter en route to a 39-24 win. Salem was led in scoring by Kirsten Stephens with 16 points followed by Allison Jones with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Salem finished their regular season 19-5 and they will share the SCA Championship with the Houston Lady Tigers and Ava Lady Bears with a 6-1 SCA conference record. The Lady Tigers will have little time to rest as they will be at Owensville on Monday night against Union in district play. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will go for their second consecutive perfect SCA season tonight as they will host Houston at the Salem High School Gym. The JV action will start at 6:00 and following that game, the five seniors will be honored. They are Jordan Davis, Solomon Mc Neal, Matt Whitaker, Brad Lewis and Josh Hafner. Salem enters the game with a 14-9 record overall and 6-0 SCA record. You can hear the game on KSMO radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The St. Louis Blues will be facing Nashville tonight at the Scottrade Center starting at 7:00. KSMO will air part of the first period, break away for Salem Tiger Basketball, then bring listeners the third period of the contest. The Blues have not beaten Nashville this year and have gone the last 15 games against them without a win. Then on Sunday, the Blues will host the Minnesota Wild starting at 5:00. You can also hear that game on KSMO. The Blues are currently nine points out of a playoff position.

The Missouri Tigers will face Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon starting at 12:00 on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 15-9 overall and 4-7 in the Big 12.

Funeral services for Mildred Russell of Rogers, formerly of Salem, age 91, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral Service for Stanford W. Sheets of Salem, age 91, will be held Saturday, February 17th at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Billie F. Volner of Salem, age 77, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Grace Communtiy Church. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. An Odd Fellow Service will be held Sunday eveninhg at 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grive Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association, St. Louis Regioanl Chapter, and cards are available at the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Erma Pewitt of Kalispell, Montana, formerly of Salem, age 77, will be held Monday, February 26^th, at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery where graveside services for her husband, L. Maurice Pewitt of Mesa Arizona, formerly of Salem, age 74, will be held.
