An accident happened Wednesday evening in Dent County on Highway 19 about ten miles south of Salem that took the life of a woman from Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 25-year old Sara R. Conway of Salem was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier southbound when she failed to negotiate a curve and slid off the left side of the roadway where the vehicle struck a tree. Conway was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Deputy Coroner Ben Pursifull. Conway was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Cavalier was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4150 and 4155, while materials will be added and grading will be done to county roads 5400 and 6460. He also indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5550. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330 and 5283; that grading was going to be done on county roads 2260, 2270 and 5287; and that materials would be added to county roads 5225 and 5285. He did indicate that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2240. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reminded the commission of the SACBA Awards dinner on Tuesday, February 26th at the Gathering Place at the Grace Community  Church and tickets are available from SACBA Board members and at the Salem TCRC. He also said that SACBA would be holding their annual Trivia Night as a fund raiser on March 23rd at the City Hall Auditorium at 6:00. Skiles went on to say that many Dent County residents who have telephone land lines are paying Phelps County sales tax on their phone bill. If your phone bill indicates that you are paying Phelps County sales taxes on your CenturyLink phone bill, please call the CenturyLink store in Rolla at 573-308-0040 and have them change that to the Dent County sales tax. You can also stop by their store at the corner of Highway 63 and 72 in Rolla. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she would hold a voter registration drive at the Salem High School Gym Lobby tonight starting at 6:00 at the Boys Basketball game. The last day to register to vote for the April election will be March 6th. She also indicated that the courthouse would be closed on Monday for President’s Day. The commissioners then opened bids for grader blades and culverts, but they did not make any decisions until the bids are reviewed. At the last meeting, James Fulton brought in minutes from the Dent County Commission from 2002 where all but 2/10ths of a mile of Dent County Road 2230 had already been vacated. The original public notice by the county indicated that the road was .57 of a mile long. The public document was amended to reflect that change. Tyson Richardson came in  to ask about getting a Private Lane sign for his road. The county does not provide a sign and the landowner has to get their own sign. Commissioner Skiles said that he may be able to get a sign through the Sheltered Workshop, but found out that they do not create signs that include letters. The county received phone bids on unleaded fuel and the low bid from MFA Oil of $3.18 per gallon for 1,000 gallons was  accepted. Linda Shelton, representing the Dent County 4-H and Junior Livestock Committee, came in to visit about the need for new facility for FFA, 4-H and a county fair. She presented the commission with a copy of a state statute for their information that deals with this subject. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
