The Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department will be holding a fundraiser to help raise funds for their “Shop with a Cop” program. The fundraiser will be in the form of an 8 by 10 inch studio quality “classic vintage” color children portrait featuring traditional costumes and props. The portrait will be of children up to 12 years of age. In order to participate in this special fundraiser, parents will need to get a certificate, fill out the stub and submit it with $10. Appointments will be made and photos will be taken on March 2^nd or 3^rd between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM in Salem. Certificates will be available at the Salem Police Department, Dent County Sheriff’s Department, William Lynch Elementary School, the Upper Elementary School, the City Administrative Offices Building, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Oak Hill R-1 School, Green Forest R-2 School, Dent-Phelps R-3 School, Northwood R-4 School and the KSMO Radio studios. Students can return their stubs with payment to the school building offices. Otherwise, the stubs and the $10 payment may be made at the Salem Police Department or Dent County Sheriff’s Department. There is a limit of one certificate per household. Parents will receive the 8 by 10 photo when they come to review the photos. At that time, parents can select different packages of photos of the children, but parents are not obligated to buy anything. The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Wednesday, February 1^st at 6:21 at night, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a flower arrangement valued at $60 from a gravesite in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. On Thursday, February 2^nd at 6:45 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of two 17-year old Salem females for stealing merchandise valued at $35.94. Both suspects were issued a summons to appear in court and were released. On Saturday night, February 4^th at 8:51, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of South Main Street in reference to a report of harassment. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 46-year old male of Salem for telephone harassment. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Sunday, February 5^th at 3:51 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted by phone at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a gray and white Mongoose bicycle valued at $90 from the yard of a residence in the 900 block of East Hawkins. Anyone with any information regarding the theft reports, which are still under investigation, should call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

An accident occurred Monday afternoon at 12:05 pm in Texas County on Highway 63 about six miles north of Houston. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Mercury driven by 62-year old Judy Mundy of Raymondville, lost control on the snow covered roadway, crossed the centerline and struck a 2012 Nissan driven by 46-year old Billy Thomas of Nixa. Thomas suffered no injuries. Mundy and a passenger, 49-year old Donna Williams of Licking both suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 1993 Mercury was totaled and the 2012 Nizzan sustained moderate damage. Both were towed from the scene by A1Towing.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, including the Phelps County PHA, located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James, will be closed Monday, February 20^th in observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday. The offices will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21^st.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting on Thursday, February 16^th at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, and communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf will update the Board on the Free and Reduced Lunch Count, the January membership, the official ballot sample and there will be an MSBA report and conference summary by Mrs. Snider. The Board will then be updated on the superintendent search, there will be a facilities update and the Board Professional Development. In new business, the Board will address the Darrell “Jack” Holley MUSIC scholarship, the Board will consider various purchases using donated funds, consider the Salem R-80 Foundation of the Ozarks Board members, consider transportation request for Project Graduation and address resignations. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.
