The City of Salem Park Board met Tuesday evening at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. At the meeting, Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash reported that the city basketball league started this week and will continue for the next 5 weeks, weather permitting. There were 160 kids who signed up for the program in grades 1–6. The 1st-4th graders will be playing at the high school on Saturday and the 5th–6th graders will be playing at the Freedom Activity Center on Monday nights. Nash also thanked the Bank of Salem for sponsoring the basketball program like they have done the past several years. Nash then updated the Board on the DNR grant for the Little League Complex. He stated that the scoreboards had arrived and will be installed as the weather permits to complete the grant. Currently the Bank of Salem and Grace Community Church have each committed to making a donation toward buying a scoreboard. If another organization or business does not step forward, the Youth Activity Fund will purchase the third one. The discussion then turned toward the Al Brown Fields and the sewer construction work in the fields. There is concern that the new grass will not be ready for the start of the season in April, and that the electric lines that were spliced from the construction may short out in times of heavy moisture unless the lines are replaced.  Also, there are at least two banks of lights that don’t work due to a lightning strike that occurred last fall. They need to be repaired in preparation for the upcoming season. The board discussed and recommended that the replacement of the current water hydrant be made with a two-inch hydrant for field preparation. Bryan Quick asked about getting sanctioned by the NSA so the leagues could better monitor ball and bat regulations as well as other things that would fall under the National Softball Association umbrella. The Park Board will gather additional information so that a recommendation could be made at the next Park Board meeting. The Alice Lou Craig Municipal Pool was discussed. Nash presented the board with the bids for updating the current filter system at the City Pool that are to be brought before the aldermen at their next scheduled meeting. Although the bids are high, the Park Board is strongly recommending the Board of Aldermen make the much-needed repairs at the pool to alleviate current problems as well as any future ones that could leave the pool shut down for as much as 6 to 8 weeks. The board also will be submitting a proposal to the alderman to increase the fees at the pool to cover needed maintenance and the increase in the minimum wage. It is the boards’ position to keep the gap as close as possible between income and expenses. Nash reported that some light covers for the fluorescent lights should be in this week. Should this work out, the others will be ordered and installed as well. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to several calls on Saturday, February 10th. At 8:34 in the morning, a structure fire call came in on Highway 19 North past the Gano Store at a residence occupied by Chris Higgs and owned by Velma Struberg of Salem. Upon arrival firefighters found an out- building on fire. The fire was determined to be electrical. No injuries were reported. The Jadwin Fire Department was called for mutual aid and the call was then cancelled. A total of 12 firefighters responded to the call. Then at 10:31 the same morning, a brush fire call came in, located about 3.8 miles down Route W at property occupied by Chad Black of Salem and owned by Steve Ronollo of St. Louis. Upon arrival, firefighters found two to three acres of an open field on fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be burning of trash that got away. No injuries were reported. A total of 12 firefighters responded to the call. At 7:41 that evening, there was a structure fire call to the 800 block of South Missouri at property occupied by Roy Steelman and owned by Ronny Steelman of Salem. Upon arrival firefighters found smoke showing from the attic. It was determined to be an electrical shortage in the kitchen light fixture. No injuries were reported. A total of 11 firefighters responded to the call.

The Dent County Republicans will hold their regular monthly meeting tonight at the US Bank Courtesy Room at the 4th and Jackson Streets. The meeting will start at 7:00 and everyone is welcome to attend.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will try to end the regular season on a sweet note as they take on the Houston Lady Tigers tonight at the Salem High School Gymnasium. The Salem Lady Tigers come into the game with an 18-5 record overall and 5-1 in the SCA. Tonight will also be Senior Night and Caitlin Smith will be honored along with her parents prior to the varsity contest and after the JV game that will start at 6:00 You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio starting at 7:10 with Tiger Talk and Coach Phillip Karr, or hear the game online on www.ksmoradio.com.

Stefhon Hannah erupted for 25 points, leading the Missouri Tigers to a 78-71 win over the Baylor Bears in a Big 12 Conference clash from Mizzou Arena. Keon Lawrence poured in a career-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds for the Tigers (15-9, 4-7 Big 12), while Marshall Brown tallied 10 points and eight boards. Missouri grabbed a 35-32 halftime lead after holding Baylor to 31.4 percent shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers started hot in the second stanza and built a 14-point lead with 14:55 to play. Forced to play catch-up, the Bears went just 2-of-13 from three-point range in the frame. Missouri will travel to Oklahoma State on Saturday with the game scheduled for 12:30 and the pre-game show at 12:00 noon.

David Backes scored twice, including the game-winner in the third period, to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Bill Guerin and Dallas Drake each scored a goal while Manny Legace made 20 saves for the Blues, who had lost three of their last four coming into the game. The Blues have won three of five against the Blue Jackets this season, two of which were shootout victories. St. Louis returns home to face Nashville on Friday.

Funeral services for Maxine J. Schafer of Hillsboro, age 80, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mildred Russell of Rogers, formerly of Salem, age 91, will be held at 1:00 Friday at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral Service for Stanford W. Sheets of Salem, age 91, will be held Saturday, February 17th at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Billie F. Volner of Salem, age 77, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Erma Pewitt of Kalispell, Montana, formerly of Salem, age 77, will be held Monday, February 26th, at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery where graveside services for her husband, L. Maurice Pewitt of Mesa Arizona, formerly of Salem, age 74, will be held.
