The City of Salem Utility Committee held a meeting Monday night in the city hall council chambers. Utility Committee Chairman Mike Whitley discussed a number of items to be recommended to the board of aldermen at the next meeting. The committee wants to recommend to the board to increase the reconnect fee from $25 to $35 dollars and not only have the person pay the past due bill, but the current bill as well. They also want to recommend that a transfer fee be initiated for people who move from one address to another within the city limits and want to transfer their utility account and deposit. That fee was suggested to be $10. The utility committee discussed implementing a trash pickup deposit of $25 for all new accounts and they will recommend that to the board as well. The committee approved recommending that a 5% increase in sewer and water rates go into effect in April. The city is required by the grant they received for sewer improvements from DNR to have that department self-sufficient or the city may have to pay the grant back. Currently, the sewer department is not self-sufficient. The committee did discuss eliminating the 2% electric payment discount, but abandoned that idea. They do want to create an ordinance that would require that homeowners have a cleanout for the sewer five feet inside the property line that the city would maintain once installed. The committee also wants to recommend changing the ordinance that requires a separate sewer and water hookup to a workshop on private property. The committee further wants to change the current ordinance that does not allow new utility service to be started with a new tenant or owner until the old service is terminated by a signed work order. Some or all of these recommendations will be made to the board at their next meeting on February 20th. The utility committee meeting was then adjourned.
