The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that crews from both districts are preparing trucks and plows for possible inclement weather. District 1 and 2 crews are also catching up on routine maintenance and repairing road signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he recently attended a National Incident Management Systems meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to inform county officials of ways to coordinate responses to natural or man made disasters; Skiles said he would meet with Jack Emory to discuss these possibilities. David Rekowski stopped by the meeting to discuss the counties pulling of ditches and the cutting of brush on the road right of way on Dent County Road 429.  Commissioner Tune explained that the county is obligated to maintain county roads right of way to make driving conditions safe. Tune said brush is cut back from roadways to keep anything from blocking a driver’s vision and ditches are pulled to keep water flowing off of the roadway. Rekowski feels that the county is infringing on his private property. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports for February 10th through 12th involving property damage, possession, stealing, and unlawful use of a weapon. On Saturday morning, February 10th at 10:43, they received a report of damage to a mailbox located on Dent County Road 641. The box was dented and he same box was also damaged last month and had been replaced and the post repaired. Also on the 10th, a Dent County Deputy, while on patrol, observed a vehicle driving south on Jackson Street. After stopping at a stop sign and turning west onto Highway 32/72, a plastic jug fell out of the vehicle onto the roadway. A traffic stop was made and this resulted in the Salem K-9 Unit being called for assistance. The canine alerted on the driver’s side of the vehicle and revealed a small plastic bag corner, which fell from the boot of the driver. A visible white residue in the bag corner field-tested positive for methamphetamine. A 56-year old male was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance. A warrant was issued with bond set at $7,000. On Sunday afternoon, February 11th at 3:40, the department received a report of a black Pomeranian being stolen from a residence located on Lincoln Street in Bunker. The dog was reported to have been taken on the previous Thursday. On Monday morning, February 12th at 7:40, the department received a report of a sign being shot at the Corinth Baptist Church. The incident was reported to have occurred Friday or Saturday. The bullet passed through the sign and also penetrated two walls of the church building. Also on Monday, February 12th at noon, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a mailbox being shot near a residence located on Dent County Road 545. It was reported to have occurred sometime the night before. If anyone has information about theses incidents, call the sheriff’s department at 729-3241.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers committed too many turnovers allowing the Ava Lady Bears to beat the Lady Tigers, 59-55. The loss drops Salem to 5-1 in the SCA with the SCA title on the line Thursday night against Houston. Kirsten Stephens scored 22 points to lead the Lady Tigers followed by Allison Jones with 12 and Natalie Howard with 11 points. Salem is now 18-5 on the year with their final regular season game coming up Thursday night at home against Houston. It will be Senior Night on Thursday night. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will travel to Ava tonight, weather permitting, for an SCA contest with the Bears. Salem enters the game with a 5-0 SCA record and 13-9 overall on the year. If played, you can hear the game tonight on KSMO Radio or stream with us online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they will host the San Jose Sharks at the Scottrade Center. The Blues have lost five of their last eight games, but are still in the playoff hunt. You can hear the start of the game tonight on KSMO Radio, then they will break away for the Salem Tiger basketball game if played, then bring you the third period of the Blues game. If the Salem game is not played, you will hear the Blues game in its entirety on KSMO.                              

The San Diego Chargers fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer on Monday, despite him leading the team to a 14-2 record in the regular season. The Chargers' 24-21 home loss to the New England Patriots in the playoffs, combined with a strained relationship between Schottenheimer and general manager A.J. Smith, ultimately led to the ousting of the head coach. The move comes less than a month after Schottenheimer turned down a one-year extension for 2008 but agreed to stay with the team through the 2007 season.

Funeral services for Alvin Hagen of St. James, age 84, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery in Dent County.

Funeral services for Carl L. Jack of Salem, age 99, will be held this morning at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the New Hope Cemetery.

Funeral services for Wilda Freitag of St. James, age 81, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden in Rolla.

Funeral services for Maxine J. Schafer of Hillsboro, age 80, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral Service for Stanford W. Sheets of Salem, age 91, will be held Saturday, February 17th at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel.  Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00.  Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Erma Pewitt of Kalispell, Montana, formerly of Salem, age 77, will be held Tuesday, February 20th, at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery where graveside services for her husband, L. Maurice Pewitt of Mesa Arizona, formerly of Salem, age 74, will be held.
