The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Denny Mathes from the Department of Labor was in attendance and discussed safety issues for the county employees in handling the rock crushing equipment and the work area as the county is considered in the “mining” business, as well as other regulations that county workers need to abide by. He said that inspectors are now going by the letter of the law and are looking for violations, so he was giving a “heads up” to the county. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that road crews are still moving snow to widen the driving area on the roads in the Jadwin and Montauk area including Dent County Roads 6630 and 6670. He said that the blades are being replaced on the graders and that work crews are working on slick spots as well as patching some of the potholes. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that work will continue on widening the driving surfaces by pushing more snow to the road sides. He said that work continues on repairing country truck 114. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the TAC meeting in St. James Thursday night as MoDOT will be determining road maintenance priorities. He also said that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on Monday for President’s Day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she would be mailing out 9,000 voter ID information cards in Dent County today. If people do not receive a voter ID information card after about a week, they will need to contact the Dent County Clerk’s office to see if there is an address problem. She said that she would be delivering the handicapped accessible voting booths and the ad placards to the schools next week when they are back open. David Bollerjack from Van Kappel Equipment then brought in a bid for a new loader for the county as they are looking at leasing a new one. Dent County Clerk Curley then opened bids for a 2000-2007 pickup truck that the county would like to purchase for the Road and Bridge Department. Five bids were presented from C & E Auto Sales, Classic Joyride, B & B Motors, Heavin Motors and Kenny Welch. The commissioners will review all the information submitted in detail before making a decision. At the last meeting, the commissioner awarded the phone bid for propane gas to Ferrellgas for $2.09 per gallon. Bids were presented by Chilton Oil, Titan, Ferrellgas and MFA Oil, and Ferrellgas was the lowest bid. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday, February 18^th at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Roses and Romance Giveaway courtesy of US Foodservice Outlet, That Special Touch Florist, My Place Restaurant, Phil-mart and KSMO Radio ended with one grand prize winner and two winners of a dozen roses each from That Special Touch Florist. The Grand Prize winner was George Gruendel winning two nights at the Cheshire Inn in St. Louis, one dozen roses from That Special Touch Florist, dinner for two at My Place Restaurant, $50 in gas from Phil-Mart and $50 cash. The Dent County Extension Council has announced the eight members elected to serve two-year terms on the council after last week’s voting ended. Newly elected from the Central District were David Headrick, Chip Adams, Billy Smith, and re-elected were Becki Godi and Jim Freeman; Kelly Case from the Northern District was re-elected; and newly elected from the Southern District were Josh Cartwright and Tracy Strange. An accident happened Thursday at 2:20 on Highway 119 about six-tenths of a mile south of Highway 32 north of Montauk. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Chevy Pickup driven by 77-year old Homer R. Mallady of Salem, pulled from a driveway into the path of a 1997 Ford Aspire driven northbound by 50-year old Nathan D. Holland of Columbia. Holland suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment. Both Mallady and Holland were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained minor damages and were driven from the scene.
