The Public Water Supply District #1 has extended the boil order through Tuesday, February 17^th, for the area south of the Salem City limits on Highway 19. A major leak has been repaired and the water sample has been sent off for testing and it will take until Tuesday to get the results. Again, the Public Water Supply District #1 has extended the boil order for the area south of the city limits on Highway 19 through Tuesday, February 17^th.

An accident happened at 3:05 Wednesday in Shannon County on Highway 19 about six miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Mack Tractor Trailer Unit driven by 38-year old Christopher Q. Hamilton of Timber, went off the roadway and overturned. Suffering minor injuries was a passenger in the truck, 41-year old Jeff Enloe of Timber. He was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. Hamilton did not suffer any injuries. Both he and Enloe were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The truck was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of January. For the month there were 73 9-1-1- calls, of which all were responded to with four of the calls being prank calls. The department served 185 papers consisting of 106 civil papers, 75 criminal papers and four notices to vacate. The Sheriff’s Department also served 20 felony warrants and 32 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were eight drug arrests and 12 domestic disturbance calls were investigated. The Sheriff’s Department issued 48 tickets, made 69 traffic stops, made three DWI arrests and assisted on 19 traffic accidents. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted three death investigations. For the month of January, the Sheriff’s Department investigated eight burglaries, seven assaults, seven thefts, nine property damage reports, four crimes against children, and three trespassing and or property line dispute reports. The department spent 143 hours working in court, 26 hours testifying and 16 hours training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 146 calls during the month and made one community policing appearance. In the Dent County Jail Report for January, there were 33 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of nine. There were six transfers to the Department of Corrections, three transfers to or from other departments and one transfer to a mental facility. During the month of January, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 15,846 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

February is “Heart Month” and the Salem Memorial District Hospital located Highway 72 North will be holding a “Heart Health Screening” Tuesday through Thursday, February 17^th through February 19^th in the hospital library from 6:00 to 9:00 am. The Heart Health Screening will offer a Lipid Profile for $15, a Cardiac CRP for $10 and a pulmonary function, blood pressure and body fat percent tests for FREE. Be sure and FAST for accurate results. No food or drinks for 12 hours before the test. Water and medications are allowed. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is launching a month-long effort in February to rid homes of mercury, with nearly 90 mercury drop-off locations throughout the state, including 24 in southeast Missouri. The department, working with fire departments and county health offices throughout the state, is providing mercury drop off buckets in communities statewide. Any private citizen or nonprofit agency can leave mercury-containing instruments, like thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, thermostats or switches, at any of these sites. The program does not include compact fluorescent bulbs. The department is asking that anyone seeking to dispose of items at these sites first secure the item in two zip top bags and then placed in a sealed container (such as a coffee can or plastic margarine tub). The extra packaging is required to prevent the release of mercury if the item breaks while being transported. Please call the site before taking mercury instruments for disposal, and never leave items if the facility is closed. The Department of Natural Resources will collect the dropped off items at the end of February and transport them to Jefferson City. The items will be picked up by a state contractor who will recycle what can be recycled and properly dispose of the rest. Anyone who is uncomfortable with transporting mercury instruments, or who has large quantities of mercury, can contact the department's spill line at (573) 634-2436 to arrange to have items picked up. Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee has begun an audit of Crawford. The audit report, which will be available to the public, will include recommendations for any changes needed in county government operations. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will take on the Licking Lady Wildcats tonight in the semi-final of the Newburg Tournament starting at 8:30. The winner will play in the championship game Saturday night at 6:30 with the loser of the game playing for third place at 5:00 Saturday at Newburg. Salem enters the game with a 9-12 record. Salem lost to Licking earlier this year, 56-47, in a game that was tied at 35-35 after three quarters of play.

The St. Louis Blues will hit the road to attempt to get back in the playoff race tonight at Nashville. The game begins at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO. The Blues are 3-1-2 in their last six games.

The Blues have sent forward Yan Statsny to Peoria for coditioning as he has recovered from his broken thumb.

District seeds have been released and the Salem Lady Tigers are seeded 4^th in the district while the Salem Boys are seeded 6^th. The Lady Tigers first district game will be at 6:00 on Monday, February 23^rd at Owensville against Owensville. The winner of that game will face St. James on Wednesday night, February 25^th at 6:00. The Boys first district game will be on February 24^th at 7:30 against Eldon at Owensville. The winner of that game will face Owensville at 7:30 on February 26^th.

Funeral services for Harry E. Cassidy of Salem, age 86, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Hutson-Walker Cemetery in Sligo. Memorials may be made to the Hutson-Walker Cemetery.

Memorials services for Hal M. Huff of St. James, age 75, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the St. James United Methodist Church in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Camp Brimshire of the Ozark Rivers Chapter of the National Audubon Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
