The winner of the Roses & Romance Giveaway, sponsored by Fidelity Communications, US Food Service Outlet, That Special Touch Florist, My Place Restaurant, Phil Mart and KSMO Radio was Wilma Teifenthaler. Wilma wins two nights at Chateau on the Lake in Branson, a dozen roses from That Special Touch Florist, a candlelight dinner for two at My Place Restaurant, $50 in gas from Phil Mart and $50 in cash. The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors has called Special Meeting of the Finance Committee for Tuesday, February 12th at 5:00 in the hospital library. The Board of Directors Finance Committee is meeting to discuss the 2009 budget proposals. The meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of January. For the month there were 69 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with 14 of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 177 papers consisting of 96 civil papers, 78 criminal papers and three notices to vacate, plus they also served 24 felony warrants and 15 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were four drug arrests and 18 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 47 tickets, conducted 80 traffic stops, made five DWI arrests, conducted 13 ambulance assists, assisted on 36 traffic accidents, and assisted other agencies 33 times. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted three death investigations. For the month of January, the Sheriff’s Department investigated three burglaries, two assaults, five thefts, six property-damage reports, investigated one crime against children and eight trespassing/property line disputes. The Department spent 100 hours working in court, eight hours testifying and two hours in training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 246 calls during the month and made five community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for January, there were 47 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 12. There were eight transfers to the Department of Corrections and 23 transfers to or from other departments. During the month of January, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 19,383 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, a stolen vehicle and DWI’s. On January 16th at 4:16 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 1200 block of South Washington in reference to property damage. The report revealed a 20-year old Salem male damaged a vehicle. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released. On January 17th at 10:05 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 45-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On January 18th at 1:30 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen vehicle. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took a purple 1993 Ford Escort Wagon fro the area of MacCarthur and Gibbs. The vehicle was later located parked on Young Street. On January 19th at 2:46 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 47-year old Salem female for driving while intoxicated. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents may call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
Icy road conditions have cancelled all Salem and Dent County Schools today with Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3 and Northwood R-4. Also cancelled today are the Salem GED classes and Salem Headstart to name a few. Before heading out today, you may want to call the business or place you are going to make sure they will be open.

With her nomination to the McDonald’s All American™ High School Girls Basketball Team, Natalie Howard of Salem Senior High School was recently recognized as one of the top prep standouts in the nation. The 5’ 8” Point Guard ranks among the top 1,000 nominees competing to fill one of 24 positions on the Girls Team, which will feature an East vs. West showdown on March 26, 2008 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 6:00 from the Bradley Center and will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The final team roster will be announced later this month.
The Salem Girls Basketball game with the Ava Lady Bears last night was postponed due to the weather. They will attempt to make up the game tonight at 6:00 with the varsity game. Playing of the JV game will be held at a different gymnasium if officials can be found. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem High School Basketball Homecoming was rescheduled for tonight. Senior Candidates for Queen are Amy Milligan, Kathleen Lowery and Terra White. The Junior Class attendant will be Bethany Kellerman and the Sophomore Class attendant Kendra Case. The escorts this year will be Zack Moser, Phillip Moser, Luke Heithold, Taylor Sirois and Aaron Loker. The ceremony will occur between the girl’s varsity and boy’s varsity basketball contests. The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they will host the Los Angeles Kings starting at 7:30. Depending upon the Salem basketball games, KSMO Radio will either join the game in progress after the boys game or air it live starting at 7:30 if the high school games are postponed. The Blues have lost four straight games and 11 of their last 13 games.
Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch and confessed steroids dealer and informant Kirk Radomski won't testify at Wednesday's public hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That leaves seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens and his ex-trainer, Brian McNamee, as the main participants for the hearing on the Mitchell Report, regarding the illegal use of steroids in Major League Baseball. Clemens was on Capitol Hill last week to deliver closed-door sworn testimony to deny that he ever used performance- enhancing drugs, as indicated otherwise in the Mitchell Report.

Funeral services for Marie H. Koboldt of St. Louis, formerly of Rolla, age 90, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 Peace Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Visitation will be Wednesday 5:00 to 7:00 at James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rolla.
Funeral services for Carl Gibbs Sr. of St. Charles, formerly of Salem, age 89, will be Thursday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery.
Funeral services for Wilma Claudine Jenkins of Salem, age 89, will be Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Tigers Memorial Fund or your choice.
