The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers captured the Newburg Tournament Championship as they beat St. James, 42-36. Salem was led in scoring by Natalie Howard with 14 points and Kirsten Stephens added 11 more. This is the second straight title for Salem at Newburg. Salem had beaten Viburnum on Thursday night, 44-41 to get to the final. Named to the All-Tournament Team for Salem were Natalie Howard, Kirsten Stephens and Allison Jones. Salem is now 18-4 on the year and they will travel to Ava tonight to face the Lady Bears in SCA play. The JV will start things out at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. Salem is 5-0 in the SCA going into tonight’s game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers responded to the challenge of key games in back to back nights as they trounced Mountain Grove Friday night in the front of a packed high school gymnasium, 61 to 36. Salem was led in scoring by Taylor Sirois with 14 points and 13 rebounds followed by Brad Lewis with 12 points and seven rebounds. Also in double figures for Salem was C.J. Smith with 11 points and Solomon McNeal with 10. Salem improved to 13-9 on the year and 5-0 in the SCA and they will be in Ava for another key SCA contest Tuesday night.
Julian Wright posted a career-high 33 points and 12 rebounds, as the ninth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks made the familiar trip to Columbia for a 92-74 victory over the Missouri Tigers in the Border Showdown from the Mizzou Center. Brandon Rush scored 21 points for the Jayhawks (21-4, 8-2 Big 12), who completed a week of rivalries after posting a 97-70 rout of Kansas State in Lawrence on Wednesday. Stefhon Hannah had 19 points and five assists for Missouri (14-9, 3-7), which has struggled in league play this season and has lost three of its last four. Kalen Grimes posted 16 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Lawrence scored 13 points. Keon Lawrence added 11. Missouri will face Baylor Wednesday night.
Simon Gagne scored late in the third period to tie the game and then tallied again 27 seconds into overtime to win it for Philadelphia as the Flyers ended a franchise-record 13-game home losing streak with a 4-3 victory over St. Louis. Keith Tkachuk posted a goal and an assist and Sanford ended with 22 saves for the Blues, who have lost five of their last seven contests. The Blues will host the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night.
