The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a burglary, a mental commitment order and a death investigation. On Wednesday, February 3rd at 3:20 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of West Hunt in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had broken into the residence and took without permission a TV, VCR, computer monitor, tools and other miscellaneous items. On Friday, February 5th at 7:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Salem Memorial Hospital in reference to a mental commitment order. A 47-year old Salem woman was taken into custody and transferred to the Phelps County Regional Hospital with the assistance of the Salem Memorial Ambulance. On Sunday, February 7th at 7:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 500 block of East Tenth Street in reference to a death investigation. Investigation of the report revealed that 88-year-old Dolly Fay Labruyere had passed of natural causes. The Meramec Regional Planning Commission will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30 pm. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the January meeting, and several contracts, Co-Chairman Russell Scheulen will report on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting held prior to the regular meeting. Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Tom Klebba will report on business loan activities and T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities. Scheulen and Director Richard Cavender will then report on issues of interest. The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission is open the public.

Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission awarded a resurfacing project for Route 32 in Dent County, during it's February 4th meeting.  The project includes 2.614 miles of resurfacing on Route 32, from west of Route 72 to west of Route P in Salem. The addition of a concrete curb ramp is also included to meet Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards. The project is included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and was awarded to N. B. West Contracting Company of Brentwood, Mo. at a total cost of $486,760.11. The Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) is accepting applications from individuals wishing to be considered for its Community Advisory Council (CAC). The 13-member CAC works to gather community input on health issues affecting Missourians and informs the grantmaking decisions and strategic planning of MFH’s Board of Directors, with special focus on programs for the uninsured, underinsured and underserved. The CAC also is responsible for nominating Board candidates each year.  CAC members can serve up to two consecutive three-year terms. MFH is committed to a CAC that represents Missouri’s racial, ethnic, cultural, gender and geographic diversity. CAC members must reside in MFH’s service area, which includes 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis. Established in 2000, MFH is the largest nongovernmental funder of community health activities in Missouri. MFH is in its seventh year of grant making, having issued more than $360 million in grants and awards to date.  It is dedicated to serving the uninsured, underinsured and underserved in 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis. Applications are due by March 5th.

The Dent County Sheriff's office reported three incidents that occurred last week. According to Sheriff Rick Stallings, Rick Woods, Jr. was arrested at 8:48 in the morning on February 3rd by Deputy Rich Piatt, and was issued a summons to appear in court for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and was released. The summons was issued after a syringe was located in Wood's coat following a traffic stop. Stallings also reported that Tiffany Rostron was issued two citations from a traffic stop by Deputy Michael Letchworth at 2:37 in the afternoon on February 7th at Highway 19 and Dent County Road 4122. Rostron was driving a Jeep Cherokee and was originally stopped for a missing license plate and front-end damage. The marijuana was found after Rostron gave Letchworth permission to search the vehicle. The citations were for the possession of up to 35 grams or less of marijuana, and also for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and she was released from custody. Also on February 7th, the sheriff’s department found an abandoned Pontiac Grand Prix on Dent County Road 3220 at 3:20 p.m. The vehicle was towed to Whitaker Towing. The vehicle was reportedly a stolen vehicle out of Rolla. The vehicle records showed that the Pontiac was owned by Danielle R. Stevens of Rolla.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association “Gift of Time” Awards Banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 16th at The Gathering Place at the Grace Community Church beginning at 6:30 pm. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will host their annual volunteer recognition dinner, honoring citizens and organizations, who have significantly enhanced the quality of this community during 2009. The categories for volunteer recognition are:  Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (an adult or adult organization), Youth (a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation. Individual nominated include; Jim & Jan Almond, Jay Anderson, James Coffman, Jann Craig, Verla Floyd, Bonnie Gray, Houlie Ibrahim, Pat Johnson, Gary & Shirley Larson, Dan Salyer & Jeff Sellers, Julie Salyer, Mary Lou Smith, Rev. Doug Walter, Pam Webber and Deloris Gray Wood. Organizations nominated include; The Dent County Fire Protection District Firefighters, The Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit Board of Directors and the Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 50-49 contest to Thayer Wednesday night at the SHS Gym. Phillip Moser led the Salem Tigers with 12 points followed by Jonathan Hambacker with 10 points. Salem falls to 6-15 on the year and are 1-3 in the SCA. They will be at Mountain View-Liberty Friday night to face the Eagles.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers dropped their 5th straight game as they lost to Fatima, 40-35 in the Newburg Tournament. Salem will face the Newburg Lady Wolves tonight at 5:30 in the loser’s bracket of the tournament. Salem is now 11-10 on the year.

J.T. Tiller scored a season-high 17 points after discarding a facemask for a broken nose in the opening minute, helping Missouri beat Iowa State 65-56 on Wednesday night. Laurence Bowers added 10 points and a career-best 12 rebounds, and Justin Safford had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers (18-6, 6-3 Big 12). Missouri survived 4-for-20 shooting from 3-point range in its first time back in the Mizzou Arena since its 32-game home court winning streak was ended by Texas A&M a week earlier. Missouri will be at Baylor Saturday afternoon at 12:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson will reportedly not have any charges brought against him in the case stemming from accusations of abuse made by a former girlfriend. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday that Las Vegas police determined there is insufficient evidence to bring any charges.

Funeral services for Dolly Fay Labruyere of Salem, age 88, will be held today at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dolly Labruyere family.

Funeral services for Carl “Leroy” Smith of St. Louis, age 60, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery.

Funeral services for James Dwayne Ellis of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Centerville, age 52, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will from the 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Centerville City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Russell Carney of Steelville, age 82, will be held Monday at 10:00 at the St. Michael’s Church in Steelville. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 7:00 with a prayer service at 4:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Graveside services for Mark M. Walberg of Salem, age 79, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
