An accident happened at 12:55 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Route K about five miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet driven by 17-year old Ashley Jadwin of Salem was traveling northbound on Route K. Jadwin lost control of the Chevrolet on ice-covered roadways causing the Chevy to travel into the ditch before coming to rest. Jadwin suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Salem Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of January. During the month, they wrote 30 traffic tickets, 15 warning tickets and five equipment repair orders and they served 17 summons to appear in court. The Salem Police Department investigated three accidents, two domestic assaults, and four reports of driving while intoxicated. The Department also investigated two reports of possession of marijuana. The Police Department also investigated 19 reports of stealing, one report of property damage, two burglaries, one report of disorderly conduct, one report of forgery, one report of harassment, one missing/runaway juvenile report, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of a lost or stolen plate, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The police department conducted three death investigations. The police received 1,408 calls for service during the month and handled 103 walk-ins to the station and redirected 37 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 14 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in January included 12 calls for escorts, five 9-1-1 calls, two intoxicated driver investigation calls, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, two calls for peace disturbances, one call for a prowler, eight ambulance assist calls, four calls for alarms sounding, two calls for fights in progress, three domestic dispute calls and three fire calls. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 10,325 miles during the month of January. The Salem Police Department arrested 13 males and 11 females during the month of January.

An accident occurred on Monday, February 8^th at 10:17 am on Highway 32 at Elmer Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1998 GMC Jimmy driven by Melissa Lyles of Salem was traveling westbound on highway 32 in the outside lane approaching Elmer Street. The GMC turned left attempting to cross highway 32 to the south. The GMC did not see a 2001 Chevy driven by Jimmy Skaggs of Salem in the inside lane traveling westbound and made contact the Chevy. No injuries were reported. The GMC Jimmy sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene. The Chevy sustained moderate damage.

The Salem Rotary Club will hold their annual “Pancake Day” this Saturday from 7:00 to 11:00 at the William Lynch Elementary School Cafeteria. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and it is all you can eat. Children’s tickets are also available. The money collected is put back into the community through scholarships and donations.

An accident happened on Sunday, February 7^th at 10:30 pm on Highway 19 North at Tenth Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Evelyn McElFresh of Salem was traveling north on highway 19 when two deer ran out of the roadside park and made contact with Chevrolet. No injuries were reported. The Chevrolet sustained moderate damage.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association “Gift of Time” Awards Banquet will be held on Tuesday, February 16th at The Gathering Place at the Grace Community Church beginning at 6:30 pm. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will host their annual volunteer recognition dinner, honoring citizens and organizations, who have significantly enhanced the quality of this community during 2009. The categories for volunteer recognition are:  Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (an adult or adult organization), Youth (a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation. Individual nominated include; Jim & Jan Almond, Jay Anderson, James Coffman, Jann Craig, Verla Floyd, Bonnie Gray, Houlie Ibrahim, Pat Johnson, Gary & Shirley Larson, Dan Salyer & Jeff Sellers, Julie Salyer, Mary Lou Smith, Rev. Doug Walter, Pam Webber and Deloris Gray Wood. Organizations nominated include; The Dent County Fire Protection District Firefighters, The Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit Board of Directors and the Salem Memorial District Hospital Auxiliary. Congratulations to all the individuals and organizations nominated. Tickets must be purchased by the end of the workday on Thursday, February 11^th.
