An accident happened Saturday evening at 10:20 in Phelps County on Route FF about a mile and a half from Edgar Spring’s that took the life of Edgar Springs teenager. According to the highway patrol report, 19-year old Austin Kuhn of St. Robert was driving a 2005 Chevrolet 1500 eastbound when the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway, overturned and then struck a fence. Ejected from the vehicle were the driver, Austin Kuhn and a passenger, 18-year old Shane Black of Edgar Springs. The Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones pronounced Black dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Morgue at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Kuhn suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance District. Neither the driver  nor passenger was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Chevy was totaled and removed from the scene by Lucas Garage.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving a shoplifter, theft, a student in possession of drugs and theft from a residence. On Monday, January 26th at 3:00 pm, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed someone unknown took two bicycles valued at $200.00 from the yards of residences near the 100 block of Brady Lane. That same afternoon at 3:28, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 49-year old male of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $26.33. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, January 27th at 4:00 pm, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $20.00. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, January 28th at 2:37 pm, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a student in possession of drugs. That investigation led to the detention of a 16-year old Salem female juvenile for possession of prescription drugs at school. She was released to her parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for further review. That same afternoon at 3:00, an officer transported a 35-year old female of Newburg from Phelps County to Dent County in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that same night at 8:15 pm, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft from a residence in the 500 block of North Jackson. The investigation of the report revealed a person or persons unknown took a Wii game console and games valued at $485.00 from a residence. Anyone with any information regarding the theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to the call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The 2015 Forage and Beef Conference will be held on Monday, March 2nd at the Knights of Columbus in Cuba. Registration will begin at 12:30 pm followed by Goat Health at 1:00; Novel Fescues at 1:45. Then at 3:00, a Missouri Department of Agriculture Market News Reporter will speak; plus Marketing with local sale barn representatives in the area will also occur before Quality Forages are addressed at 5:15 with dinner at 6:30. Captain James W. Remillard, the commanding officer of Troop I, announces that sometime during the month of February, troopers assigned to Troop I will be involved in a special enforcement operation specifically targeting those drivers who are operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. During this operation, troopers will patrol various highways in Crawford County where statistics have shown a larger number of crashes and arrests involving impaired drivers have occurred in the past. In support of “The Drive To Zero Highway Deaths” the Patrol encourages motorist to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. 

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, is a 10-week Strength Training Program consisting of warm-up exercises, simple strengthening exercises, with or without weights and then cool down stretches, all to help you learn to improve your strength, balance and overall health. Sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension, classes will be held the Salem Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem from 10:00 to 11:00 am from March 5th to May 7th. Class is limited to 15 and the cost is $25 for all 10 sessions and is due at he beginning of the first class. Benefits include: arthritis relief, improve balance, enhance flexibility, strengthen bones, weight control, lifts depression, stress reduction, reduce risks for heart disease and maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Payton Curley’s 3-pointer gave the Salem Lady Tigers the lead late in the 4th quarter and key free throws by Curley and Kara Powell in the last minute lifted the Lady Tigers past Mountain Grove, 57-53 in a key SCA contest Saturday evening at the SHS Gym. Curley led all scorers with 17 points followed by Savannah Hanning with 14 points and Kari Hatridge with 11. The Lady Tigers are now 16-4 on the year and 5-0 in the SCA Conference. They will be in Cuba tonight to face the Lady Wildcats starting at 6:00.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers received balanced scoring and went onto beat the Ava Bears Friday night for their first SCA win of the year, 75-59. Zayne Kyser scored 18 points to lead all Tiger players followed by Eric Wood with 15 points, Logan Pogue netted 14 more and Zack Elliott added 12 points. Salem evened their overall record at 10-10 and is now 1-2 in the SCA. They will host Houston Tuesday night.

Marian Hossa scored two goals in the third period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday at Scottrade Center. Vladimir Tarasenko and David Backes scored second-period goals for St. Louis, which was coming off Friday's 7-1 loss at Columbus that ended its impressive 12-0-1 stretch. Brian Elliott allowed three goals on 27 shots. The Blues will host Arizona Tuesday night starting at 7:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Basketball.

Danuel House scored 20 points as the Texas A&M Aggies easily handled the Missouri Tigers, 83-61, in SEC action at Mizzou Arena. Wes Clark finished with 15 points and six assists for Missouri who are now 7-16 overall and 1-9 in the SEC. Jakeenan Gant contributed with 10 points in the Tigers ninth consecutive loss. Missouri will face South Carolina Tuesday at 5:30 on KSMO.

Funeral services for Issac Robert Frazier of Rolla, age 1 month, will be held Thursday at 3:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Frazier Family.
