The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, both commissioners stated that workers were changing the blades on the graders and loading the trucks in preparation for the impending storm. Commissioners Purcell and Larson said that the county road crews continue to address slick spots on the county roads. This past weekend, road crews were out pushing snow in both districts and in some cases up until about 1:00 when the roads became to soft. Commissioner Larson said that the road crews would be pre-treating the chip and seal roads for the storm; and that the commission is aware that there are many potholes, but conditions right now are not conducive for repair work until the grounds firm up. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that all the commissioners attended their required training last week. He also said that he received a response from Phelps County Clerk Carol Bennett for the certification of the guards used at the Nash trial, and from Phelps County Circuit Clerk Sue Brown about information on the bills being charged to Dent County for the Nash trial. He said that he had not yet had the opportunity to review the paperwork sent or their responses to his questions. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the Dent County Treasurer and her office both balanced for the month of January, and that the financial statement is now ready for the public notice to be put in the Salem News. She also said that she received a grant of $2,400 from the Secretary of State’s office through federal HHS funds for the purchase of eight handicapped accessible voting booths and eight two-sided voting location signs with the handicapped emblem. She said that now all the voting locations would have a handicapped accessible voting booth. It was also noted that the county is accepting bids until Thursday morning at 10:00 for the purchase of a 2000-2007 pickup truck for the Road and Bridge Department. At the last meeting, 8th Congressional District Representative Jo Ann Emerson, as well as Darrin Lingle and Kristie Nitsch from her office, were at the courthouse to discuss a couple of issues. One issue was the National Forest Service access request from Jerry Clements that was denied, and the issue has been resolved as the National Forest Service is going to issue a permit to Clements that will give him access to the Forest Service Road so that the marketable timber on his property can be harvested and sold. Emerson also discussed appropriations of the budget and asked what Dent County needs as far as infrastructure. Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs was in to let the commission know that two USDA Rural Development Grants have been received that will help expand the current Farmer’s Market. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
