An accident happened at 11:40 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about 15 miles west of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Ford F-150 driven by 21-year old Kasandra Conway of Bunker was traveling westbound on Highway 72. The Ford traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck two trees. Conway and a passenger, 2-year old Ashton Soard, both suffered minor injuries and sought their own treatment. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. 

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of January. During the month, they wrote three traffic tickets and two warning tickets. They served 22 summons to appear in court and three fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated nine accidents, one assault, one report of harassment, and four domestic assaults. The Police Department also investigated 13 reports of stealing, four reports of property damage, one burglary, four reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of forgery, one report of trespassing, one report of a lost or stolen plate, one reports for open container, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation. The Salem Police Department redirected 59 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 34 hours in court testifying, and six hours as court bailiff. The calls in January included 24 calls for escorts, 13 9-1-1 calls, two intoxicated driver investigation calls, two calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, one call for a peace disturbance, 19 ambulance assist calls, four calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, five domestic dispute calls, four fire calls and three wreckers were needed. During the month of January the Salem Police Department arrested nine males and ten females, and they drove a total of 9,646 miles during the month.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association “Gift of Time” Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, February 19th at the Commons beginning at 6:30 pm. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will host their annual volunteer recognition dinner, honoring citizens and organizations that have significantly enhanced the quality of this community. The dinner will be catered by My Place Restaurant. Nominations for individuals doing volunteer work done in 2008 are: Jay Anderson, Diane Boulware, Jamin Bray, Ed Carmack, Carol Davis, Phyllis Hocker, Lane Howard, Shirley Perkins, Bill and Sherry Stack, Leila Thomas, and Carl and Missy Williams.  Organizations nominated for their volunteer work in 2008 are: Common Grounds, Dent County Fire District Firefighters, Dent County 4-H Leaders, Progressive Ozark Bank/Financial Group and Show Me H.O.P.E. Tickets to the event are available at the Salem TCRC, the Visitor’s Center and from individual Salem Area Community Betterment Association Board Members. Joan Flatt of Lenox will speak tomorrow night on how DNA is traced through the male lineage to provide assistance to genealogy research at Dent County Historical Society 2009 Speaker Series at the Pizza Inn at 6:00. The program is free and open to the public.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III, and Northwood R-IV, will be closed on Friday, February 13^th through Tuesday, February 17^th.  Classes will resume on Wednesday, Feb. 18^th.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform edge rut repair on Highway 19 in Dent County, from the intersection of Route B to the intersection of Highway 32 beginning today.  Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Edge rut repair work requires placing material at the edge of the roadway and is necessary to reduce shoulder drop off. While performing this function, crews and equipment are located directly on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when moving through the work zone. C.J. Smith scored 24 points as the Salem Tigers blew a five-point lead with under a minute to go, then rallied in overtime to beat the Willow Springs Bears, 49-46. A key 3-pointer by Philip Moser put Salem on top for good in the overtime period. Grant Gordon added 11 points in the game as Salem hit only 13-25 from the free-throw line including 7-14 in the fourth quarter. The Tigers climb to 3-0 in the SCA and are now 10-10 on the year. Salem will travel to Thayer tomorrow night to face the Bobcats in another key SCA contest. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers lost to the Thayer Lady Bobcats Friday night in a make-up game from last Monday night that was postponed due to water in the gym and numerous power outages. Salem will participate in the Newburg Tournament this week. They are seeded 7^th and will face Dixon tonight at 7:00. The winner will play Thursday at 8:30 and the loser will play at 5:30 Thursday. Salem is 8-12 on the year and 3-2 in the SCA.

DeMarre Carroll exploded for 31 points and also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Missouri Tigers to an 82-68 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones in Big 12 action at the Hilton Coliseum Saturday. Kim English added 16 points for Missouri (20-4, 7-2 Big 12), while Leo Lyons tallied 12 points in the win.  The Tigers will have their hands full tonight when they host the Kansas Jayhawks starting at 7:30 on KSMO Radio.

Brad Boyes had a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Blues downed the Colorado Avalanche, 4-1, at Scottrade Center. Keith Tkachuk, David Perron and T.J. Oshie each lit the lamp for the Blues, who have won five of their last eight games. Chris Mason stopped 23 shots in the win. St. Louis, despite being last in the West, now stands only seven points out of the eighth spot in the conference. The Blues will face Vancouver tomorrow night at the Scottrade Center at 7:30. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger basketball.

Fresh off helping the Arizona Cardinals to an appearance in Super Bowl XLIII, Todd Haley was named the Kansas City Chiefs' new head coach at a press conference on Friday. Haley becomes the 11th head coach in club history and replaces Herman Edwards, who was relieved of his duties on January 23.

In his second season as Arizona's offensive coordinator, Haley guided an aerial assault that ranked second in the league at 292.1 passing yards per game. The Cardinals also scored a franchise-record 427 points in the regular season -- third most in the league -- on the way to a 9-7 record and NFC West championship.

Funeral services for Archie A. (Buddy) Spence of Edgar Springs, age 79, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Military honors will be held at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Spence family.

Funeral services for Willa Mae Yocom of Davisville, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Steelville Cemetery Association.
